POSITION TITLE: Assistant Director of Transportation
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
POSITION SUMMARY: Performs duties to supervise the operational areas of the transportation department as assigned by the Director, and assume the function of the Director in his/her absence.
FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Essential Functions
- Assists Director in creating transportation protocols and procedures.
- Assists Director with interviewing, and qualifying for hire, candidates for positions within the department, employee disciplinary measures, evaluation of employees and tracking employee attendance and maintain confidentiality as required.
- Utilizes a variety of software to develop and revise bus routes before and during each school year and keeps building principals informed of any changes.
- Cooperates and communicates with parents and students and the school community to resolve transportation complaints.
- Cooperates as necessary with other transportation persons on local, state and national levels.
- Works with building administrators on matters of discpline, safety, loading, unloading and parking.
- Maintains up-to-date records of athletic, activity, field or other special trips.
- Assists the Director with tracking of mileage, ridership, and other information for state reports.
- Assists in department budget preparation and maintains accurate records to ensure cost analysis.
- Assists Director in employee disciplinary measures.
- Provide administrative presence at bus accidents scenes and work with public authorities.
- Respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
- Monitor the day-to-day business of the transportation department and advise Director of developments and situations that impact effective department operations.
- Assists with all other duties as assigned by Director including driving bus routes as necessary.

- Normal attention with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less as well as 20 feet or more required.
- Light physical demand with regular lifting of very light to light (1 to 25 lbs.) items by hand.

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education: Basic knowledge of arithmetic, spelling, English, and grammar. Accuracy in checking, posting, proofreading, counting, use of transportation equipment, requiring basic skills knowledge. High school diploma or its equivalent. Must have a working knowledge of routing philosophies, practices, and software. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Experience: Requires a minimum of five years of experience working within a transportation,
logistics, or customer service management industry (preferably student transportation) and
experience working with student populations and/or the general public. Previous supervisory
experience required.

- Apply commonsense understanding to carry out one or two-step instructions. Deal with standardized situations with occasional or no variables in or from these situations encountered on the job.
- Add and subtract two digit numbers. Perform the four basic arithmetic operations.
- Reading, writing, and speaking at a basic level.
- Must be familiar with state, county and local traffic laws.
- Must demonstrate positive, effective “people skills”.

Computer and related software, copy and fax machines.
License(s)/Certification(s) Required: Missouri State Class B CDL with school bus and
passenger endorsements. Training certification preferred but not required. Commitment to
secure driving endorsements within 3 months and training certification within 9 months if not currently
endorsed or certified.
