POSITION TITLE : HVAC / Boiler Technician
REPORTS TO : Director of Maintenance
POSITION SUMMARY : Performs duties to ensure satisfactory operation of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigerator equipment, and also perform specified preventive maintenance to minimize equipment breakdowns.
FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Essential Functions
- Performs heating, air conditioning and refrigeration repair and maintenance duties to ensure that equipment is operating at expected level of performance.
- Repairs rooftop air conditioning units; trouble-shoots to find leaks or electrical problems, replaces various size compressors, charges with freon, as required.
- Trouble-shoots a variety of heating and cooling units, using wiring diagrams, schematics and blue prints; replaces defective parts and components as required.
- Replaces large motors on rooftop units and motors on ventilating equipment.
- Assists in maintaining chillers and air-handlers throughout District buildings.
- Trouble-shoots room ventilating systems in District buildings, using laptop computer; downloads new and updated codes to unit ventilator boards.
- Repairs refrigerator leaks, evacuates lines and recharges units, reclaiming all freon.
- Installs new equipment and performs seasonal startup and shutdown of equipment, as required.
- Performs journeyman HVAC tasks in accordance with standard practices of the trade.
- Performs all HVAC and related duties in a conscientious manner.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Environmental / Atmospheric Conditions : Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job. Subject to both inside and outside working conditions, with some exposure to a variety of physical hazards such as proximity to electrical current and / or moving mechanical parts, as well as adverse atmospheric conditions with some present to the extent of being disagreeable. May be required to wear a respirator.
Travel between buildings may be required.
POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education : Knowledge of HVAC repair practices and applicable codes, and use of basic tools and equipment of the trade, requiring basic skills knowledge. Equivalent to graduation from a general or technical high school is preferred. Having some knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing with either having or obtaining the required EPA Universal Certificate to use refrigerant within one year of being hired may be accepted.
Experience : A minimum of one year up to and including three years of experience as a journeyman technician in HVAC and refrigeration maintenance and service is preferred. Some experience as a HVAC Technician or in a maintenance field may be accepted.
