The Caster/Hot Mill Superintendent plays a crucial role in managing the 3-shift operations for both casting and hot mill processes. This leadership position requires a deep understanding of the refining process while ensuring adherence to proper chemistries and temperatures. The superintendent is tasked with overseeing multiple aspects of production, ensuring quality control, and optimizing operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the operations of casting and hot mill processes across three shifts.
- Ensure the accuracy of chemical compositions and temperature settings during the refining process.
- Manage heat changes and supervise the degassing process to maintain product integrity.
- Monitor and adjust production speeds in the caster and melt shop to optimize output.
- Review and set parameters for heat openings and determine the number of heats required.
- Track and update production reports, ensuring timely ship-outs and proper labeling of scrap materials.
- Supervise and train staff, while adhering to labor agreements and managing performance.
- Implement and enforce safety policies, maintaining records and safety compliance.
- Troubleshoot operational challenges and identify continuous improvement opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with quality standards and assist in maintaining quality management systems.
- Comprehensive knowledge of primary steelmaking and casting methodologies.
- Understanding of metallurgical principles and maintenance practices.
- Strong leadership capabilities with experience in a unionized environment.
- Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, and NRS regulations.
- Proficient in data management and computer skills, including spreadsheets and word processing.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, along with strong interpersonal abilities.
