Job Role Summary

This position is primarily responsible for performing standardized vision and audiometric screening to children in Marion County schools. This position requires good customer service skills in order to ensure that students/clients are treated in a courteous and polite manner. Cross training for community outreach and home visitation will be required. Cross training for front desk/clerical responsibilities will be required. There will be traveling in Marion County in order to visit schools, homes and other MCPHD sites.

Essential Duties

Responsibility 1: Perform standardized vision and audiometric screenings in the schools, at health fairs, district offices and community settings - 50%

  • Responsible for the maintenance and safe handling of necessary screening equipment.
  • Flexible in working with school personnel to accomplish school screening.
  • Mentors new staff on the school screening process.
  • Assists other district health offices with screenings.

Responsibility 2: Computer Data Entry - 30%

  • Enter vision and audio screening results into database. Enter follow up information into database.
  • Data entry must be accurate and timely.
  • Documentation is clear and concise.
  • Learn and update knowledge of network software or other software needed for job related responsibilities.

Responsibility 3: Cross Train - 15%

  • Provide home visits to assess clients and administer directly observed therapy to Tuberculosis (TB) clients. Will require security and proper storage of TB medications.
  • To perform front desk responsibilities in the district health offices or assist with outlying clinic duties. This would require good customer service skills. There may be collection of fees.
  • To work with a multidisciplinary team of public health nurses, social workers, nutritionists, other Marion County Public Health Department/Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County employees and community partners.
  • Documentation for home visits will be completed in an accurate and timely manner.

Responsibility 4: Meetings - 5%

  • Participate in periodic staff meetings, team meetings, and committee meetings.
  • Attend in-services/seminars to increase job knowledge.
  • Attend Marion County Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County mandated meetings, i.e., Emergency Preparedness, HIPAA, BPP, etc.
  • Participate in 8 hours of health fair activities.

Associated Job Duties

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Frequent travel throughout Marion County.
  • Employee will protect and maintain confidentiality of each client’s and employee’s medical and personal information that may be obtained in the course of job related provision of care or employment.
  • Employee may need to remove confidential information from work place setting to transport to another designated setting or to make a home visit. If the information is removed, it must be protected and secured.
  • Employee must complete NIMS training 100 and 700.
  • In the event of a public health emergency, employee must be available to work on week-ends or a schedule that would differ from a normal assigned workday.
  • Participates in public health emergency preparedness exercises and in the response to public health emergencies, as directed.
  • Participates in a minimum of two H.O.P.E. health fair events totaling a minimum of eight (8) hours annually.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 1 to 3 years of previous work experience, preferred.
  • Computer skills and keyboard use including ability to type minimum of 30 words/minute.
  • Valid Indiana Driver’s license.
  • Access to own car and current automobile insurance.

  • Requires skills in effective interpersonal communication in a multi-cultural setting; may require the use of the language line or an interpreter.
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment.
  • Work collaboratively with a broad range of people.
  • Interact tactfully and diplomatically with colleagues, personnel and the public.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information according to HIPAA.
  • Requires knowledge of communities and organizations that they may come in contact.

Working Environment

  • Unconfined and confined sitting; standing; walking to and from community sites, etc.; climbing stairs; steady use hands and fingers for data entry and use of the screening equipment and lifting and carrying equipment – 20 lbs.
  • May be exposed to substandard and unsanitary living conditions.
  • May be exposed to allergens of all types (i.e., pets, dust, smoke, etc.)
  • In adverse weather conditions, may be requested to make home visits for Directly Observed Therapy for TB medications.
  • Required to wear N-95 mask in situations where client is considered infections.
