Position Summary: The Pharmacy Supervisor oversees pharmacy technicians supporting Quality and Utilization Management (UM) functions to ensure consistent operations, regulatory compliance, and alignment with organizational goals. Reporting to the VP of Clinical Pharmacy & Quality, this role bridges clinical pharmacists, non-clinical staff, and operational teams to drive effective pharmacy services in a managed care setting. The Supervisor provides daily oversight, leads team development, and leverages clinical pharmacy knowledge to enhance performance, optimize workflows, and support improved member outcomes.

Essential Position Functions/Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of pharmacy technicians supporting Quality and Utilization Management (UM), ensuring alignment with organizational goals, regulatory requirements (CMS, NCQA, HEDIS, NYS), and internal workflows.
  • Monitor team performance, provide coaching and professional development through regular staff meetings, metrics reviews, and quality audits; support performance improvement plans (PIPs) and policy updates using real-time feedback and data.
  • Guide and mentor pharmacy technicians in applying clinical pharmacy knowledge, helping them understand the rationale behind adherence programs, coverage decisions, and formulary management.
  • Foster collaboration across clinical pharmacists, quality nurses, care managers, customer service teams, and non-clinical staff to enhance pharmacy-related workflows, improve member care coordination, and align clinical decisions with operational goals.
  • Lead interdisciplinary huddles and workgroups to troubleshoot issues, review performance metrics, and streamline pharmacy processes impacting quality outcomes.
  • Support medication adherence, formulary compliance, and gap closure efforts; escalate trends impacting member education, provider behavior, or population health strategy.
  • Serve as a key liaison and point of escalation between pharmacy operations, IT/BI systems, care teams, and compliance to resolve complex issues and promote workflow efficiency.
  • Contribute clinical insight to educational materials, internal trainings, and communications aimed at enhancing understanding of pharmacy services across care coordinators, call center agents, and other non-clinical teams.
  • Prepare performance dashboards and reports for leadership, tracking technician outcomes and supporting strategic initiatives led by the VP of Clinical Pharmacy & Quality.
  • Support audits and quality evaluations by ensuring documentation standards are met and assisting with clinical interpretation of pharmacy-related data.

Qualification Requirements

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities

  • Strong organizational, leadership, and people management skills, with the ability to coach, mentor, and develop high-performing teams.
  • In-depth understanding of pharmacy technician scope of practice, supervision requirements, and strategies for workflow optimization in clinical and non-clinical settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of managed care principles, pharmacy benefit management (PBM) structures, and utilization review processes.
  • Familiarity with federal and state healthcare regulations, including CMS, NCQA, HEDIS, and NYS Department of Health standards.
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply quality metrics (e.g., CMS Part D Star Ratings, HEDIS measures) to guide performance improvement efforts.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess operational workflows, identify process gaps, and implement sustainable improvements.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to build cross-functional relationships and collaborate with clinical pharmacists, nurses, IT/BI, compliance, and member-facing teams.
  • Comfortable leading meetings, facilitating discussions, and driving consensus among diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to translate clinical pharmacy knowledge into actionable insights for both clinical and non-clinical audiences.
  • Proficiency in preparing reports, dashboards, and presentations using data to inform strategy and leadership decision-making.
  • Experience supporting or participating in audits, compliance reviews, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Commitment to patient-centered care, population health, and optimizing health outcomes through collaborative pharmacy practice.

Training/Education

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Must hold an active and unrestricted pharmacist license to practice in the State of New York.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years in a clinical or managed care pharmacy environment.
  • Experience in pharmacy quality initiatives and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with provider, member, and pharmacy outreach efforts to enhance medication adherence and cost-effectiveness.

Base Compensation: $140,000 - $150,000 annual

Bonus Incentive: Up to 10% of base salary
