The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description The Wadsworth Center’s Division of Environmental Health Sciences (DEHS) is comprised of organic, inorganic and microbiological laboratories where skilled staff are relied upon to analyze environmental samples and human specimens, to identify and quantitate chemical contaminants that are known or suspected to be hazardous to public health. Within DEHS, the Laboratory of Organic Analytical Chemistry (LOAC) is a fully accredited laboratory, where staff support public health testing of chemical threats such as perfluoroalkyl substances in drinking water, pesticides in cannabis products, and polychlorinated biphenyls in human tissues, to name a few. A Research Scientist 1 is needed to research and analyze drinking water samples for 1,4-dioxane, an emerging organic contaminant, and record and report results. Samples from small public water supplies across New York State (NYS) are tested to assess compliance with NYS’s regulated maximum contaminant level for 1,4-dioxane.
The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: Bachelor's degree in the natural sciences and two years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field, or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and one year of post-degree professional research experience in that field.Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience in the analysis of environmental samples by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, ability to improve current or develop new organic analytical laboratory test procedures, strong knowledge of data processing, instrument control software, Microsoft Office, and principles of quantitative analysis, ability to troubleshoot and maintain laboratory instrumentation, and proficiency working in a regulated laboratory environment.
