Overview
The Senior Major Gifts Officer is a member of a collaborative Development department that strengthens relationships with donors, while increasing support and awareness of the agency. The SMGO leads the major gifts program and is responsible for developing the annual plan to raise operating funds from the private sector, with emphasis on gifts of $1,000 or more. This position identifies, engages and solicits prospective donors, building relationships that result in long-term partnerships.
Key Role Responsibilities
- Trains, supervises and appraises staff, including a Major Gifts Officer and Major Gifts Associate. Sets, models and reinforces clear expectations, monitors outcomes, creates a culture of open communication, and helps team members solve complex problems through individual supervision.
- Collaborates with the Sr. Director of Institutional Advancement and team to create the annual major gifts program plan. Sets measurable goals and outcomes, evaluates the effectiveness of the activities, monitors impact, implements improvements and regularly reports on the plan.
- Collaborates with the Sr. Director of Institutional Advancement, and relevant clinical and administrative staff to secure information to build compelling cases for support, including budgets and reports. Partners closely with the Development Writer to create major donor communications that are engaging and reflective of our anti-racist approach.
- Qualifies a portfolio of 100 individual, corporate and foundation donors.
- Creates individual goals for each donor based on their history and knowledge of their potential.
- Creates a plan for each donor and executes that plan in a timely manner so that donors are retained and upgraded.
- Produces monthly reports that accurately reflect major donor activity and performance.
- Ensures that relevant prospect/donor information is accurately recorded in the constituent relationship management system (CRM) in a timely manner.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills
Formal Education and Training
- Bachelor’s degree required
- CFRE preferred
Experience
- Five years of fundraising or business development experience
- Three years as a Major Gifts Officer or equivalent position
- 1-2 years supervisory experience required
- Demonstrated experience using a CRM
