The Senior Database Administrator plays a crucial role in ensuring the operational excellence and stability of our hybrid database architecture, spanning SQL Server on-premises, Azure SQL Databases, Managed Instances, and Fabric Databases in the cloud. Responsible for creating, managing, and monitoring mission-critical databases core to the organization's success.
The ideal candidate will ensure the availability, performance, and security of our databases, supporting both OLTP and OLAP systems, as well as integration and ELT processes. This includes the administration of SQL Server systems, the design and development of new database solutions, solving complex performance problems, capacity planning, and automation. Given our healthcare focus, strict adherence to HIPAA compliance is essential.
As a senior member of Enterprise Architecture team, you will field escalated issues related to data architecture, query design/development/best practice, provide guidance to colleagues, and work collaboratively in delivering database solutions that exceed business expectations. You are

Essential Position Functions/Responsibilities:
- Database Administration: Implement and manage operational aspects of Microsoft’s products and services (SQL Server, Azure SQL Database/MI and Microsoft Fabric) across a hybrid architecture.
- Performance Tuning & Scalability: Conduct performance and capacity planning, including tempdb management, parallelism, data file and I/O throughput optimization, and partitioning.
- Database Development: Deep experience in delivering end-to-end database solutions in SQL Server, from initial design and proof of concept through development, testing, and delivery.
- Integration & ELT: Lead the administration, design, development, and maintenance of end-to-end data pipelines across internal and external data sources. Leverage modern ETL tools and frameworks to minimize file or source-specific development, maximize automation, and ensure data integrity throughout its lifecycle.
- Backup, Recovery, & Business Continuity: Create, implement, and validate solutions (AAG, MI Link, Mirroring, Transaction Log Shipping) that ensure high-availability and adherence to RTO/RPO disaster recovery objectives.
- Monitoring & Troubleshooting: Continuously monitor database performance, blocking queries, extended wait times, disproportionate resource utilization, and troubleshoot issues as they arise. Work with colleagues to review and optimize queries that are common offenders.
- Documentation: Maintain documentation of database configurations, processes, and standards; along with any data dictionaries, technical requirements, and architecture diagrams for new solutions.
- Data Warehouse/Lakehouse: Experience implementing and managing a unified data estate with a medallion architecture is a plus, preferably utilizing Microsoft Fabric, OneLake, Lakehouses, and Data Warehouses.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
- Expertise in SQL Server on-premises and Azure SQL Databases, Managed Instances, and Fabric Databases.
- Proficiency in backup and recovery strategies, including AAG, MI Link, Mirroring, Transaction Log Shipping, Simple/Full/Bulk-Logged Recovery Models.
- Strong knowledge of high-availability solutions and performance tuning techniques.
- Experience in optimizing performance and reliability through tempdb management, parallelism, data file and I/O throughput optimization, and table/index partitioning.
- Deep expertise in designing, documenting, coding, and delivering database solutions as part of a managed SDLC (Database Projects, Azure DevOps, Git)
- Extensive experience in ELT processes, tools (Azure Data Factory, SSIS, Data Pipelines, Dataflow Gen2, SQL) and ingestion from external sources (text files, Excel, HL7, FHIR, and other databases).
- Proficiency in creating and managing data warehouses/lakehouses using Microsoft Fabric and Azure Data Lake, following a medallion architecture.
- Familiarity with Microsoft PowerApps, C# and/or PowerShell is a plus
- Demonstrates a logical approach to problem solving with high-level analytical capabilities, ingenuity, and creativity, including attention to detail and understanding of business data and constraints.
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey information to non-technical colleagues in a concise and clear way.
- Possess strong skills in relationship management, presentation and mentoring/coaching.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment, meet deadlines, mentor, share knowledge and assume ownership for assigned areas.

Training/Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; or, an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
Experience:
- Minimum of eight (8) years professional experience in database administration and engineering, with a focus on SQL Server, Azure SQL Databases, SSIS and ETL.
