Job Profile Summary:

The Director of Pharmacy Services provides leadership, direction, and management for the pharmacy department, ensuring that all pharmaceutical needs are effectively met and the department operates in compliance with all legal, accreditation, certification, and regulatory requirements. The Director is responsible for overseeing pharmacy operations, managing resources, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and ensuring optimal service delivery aligning with strategic goals.

Knowledge & Skills:

Strong communication skills, ability to manage a team, basic computer skills, and proficiency in modern methods and procedures in compounding/dispensing prescriptions. Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to controlled substances and drug dispensing is essential.

Understanding of clinical support services, business and management principles, strategic planning, and resource allocation.

Proficient in pharmaceutical terminology, calculations, recordkeeping, and pharmacy laws and ethics.

Expertise in managing pharmaceutical finances, including budgeting, expense monitoring, and revenue performance.

Ability to effectively participate in interdisciplinary teams, with strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills.

Ability to develop, implement, and ensure compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Management: Lead the pharmacy department, providing oversight of personnel including hiring, training, delegating assignments, evaluating performance, and taking corrective or disciplinary action as necessary.

Operational Oversight: Ensure that hospital pharmaceutical needs are met by establishing staffing levels, policies, and procedures. Oversee the integration of pharmacy services into hospital operations to maximize service delivery to patients.

Pharmacy Finances & Budgeting: Manage the pharmacy’s finances, participating in budget preparation, and monitoring both expenses and revenue performance. Prepare, analyze, and submit productivity reports and interpret results, making recommendations as needed.

Medication Safety & Compliance: Ensure cost-effective, safe medication use and maintain an adequate medication supply. Oversee the control and accountability of medications, including controlled substances, ensuring all dispensing, administration, and monitoring processes are conducted safely.

Education & Training: Serve as a drug information resource to patients, medical staff, nursing staff, and ancillary department personnel. Provide educational training on medications to healthcare professionals, patients, and families.

Policy Development & Compliance: Develop and enforce policies and procedures that promote safe and appropriate medication use. Ensure the department adheres to all regulatory standards and implements improvement plans as necessary to meet quality and financial goals.

Strategic Planning & Collaboration: Collaborate in the development of short- and long-term organizational goals, objectives, and strategic plans. Evaluate the effectiveness of pharmacy services and recommend or implement improvements to meet the hospital’s needs.

Program Evaluation: Continuously monitor and evaluate pharmacy operations, implementing operational improvements and new strategies as needed to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

Environmental and Physical Demands: Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, occasional standing, occasional twisting, and occasional walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)

Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's degree or Pharm D from an accredited School of Pharmacy.

Experience: 5 years of hospital pharmacy experience which include 3 years of management experience.

Certifications/License: Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Pharmacist in the State of Mississippi; State of Mississippi Controlled Substance License.
