Performs medical laboratory tests and procedures of moderate complexity in accordance with applicable guidelines.

Job Responsibilities

1.      Performs clinical analysis of blood and other body fluids to determine chemical components.

2.      Mounts, stains, and examines smears under microscope for bacteria.

3.      Performs hematological testing. Examines smears for parasites or other irregularities in the specimen.

4.      Performs other blood tests as ordered for patient care.

5.      Performs quality control checks of instruments, solutions, and test results against established standards. Maintains quality assurance and proficiency testing as required by CLIA.

6.      Identifies and labels specimens.

7.      Performs routine laboratory procedures such as preparing slides and culturing specimens.

8.      Prepares reagents, stains, and other chemical solutions.

9.      Inventories laboratory supplies. Cleans equipment and work areas. Disposes of contaminated materials according to policy.

10.  Logs patient specimens and enters test results on forms.

11.  Collects data, prepares reports, answers correspondence, and compiles statistics as directed.

12.  Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.

13.  Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.

14.  Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with HIPAA regulations.

15.  Uses oral and written communication skills to effectively convey ideas in a clear, positive manner.

16.  Maintains established medical group policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.

17.  Implements job responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with the Code of Ethics.

18.  Maintains regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in the medical group’s sole discretion.

19.  Performs other related work as required.

Experience

  • Six months experience as a laboratory technician preferred. Experience waived if certified MLT with any of the following credentialing agencies (ASCP, AMT, and AAB).

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or equivalent, per state regulations.
  • Must have documentation of training appropriate for the testing performed prior to analysis of any specimens. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to work without direct supervision.

·        Knowledge of laboratory techniques. Ex. ability to identify trends and shifts with QC or patient results.

·        Knowledge of procedures, instruments in use, and quality control measures within the laboratory.

·        Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment with established time constraints.

·        Ability to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information.

Work Hours, Travel Requirements

·        Must be able to work a flexible schedule to work early and evening shifts and possible weekends.

·        Requires working extended or irregular hours (including overtime) as the medical group determines necessary or desirable to meet its business needs and/or the needs of its patients.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Requires working under stressful conditions where constructive criticism from others is encouraged. Physical requirements are those present in a laboratory environment with high safety or health considerations. Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable business needs. Must be able to provide administrative on-call coverage as required.

Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens: This position requires the incumbent work under conditions where the potential exists for the incumbent to make contact with blood or bodily fluids as a result of splashes, spills, and/or sharps.

1.      While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

2.      Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position. 

3.      Must be able to meet the attendance requirements of the position and adhere to the HealthTexas Medical Group attendance policy. 

4.      Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace. 

5.      Requires manual dexterity, sitting, standing (no less than 2 hours at a time), stooping, reaching, kneeling, crouching, bending, walking, lifting up to 50 lbs. 

Salary : $31 - $34
