Personal Care Aide (PCA) / Caregiver / Elder Care / Personal Assistant
(Private Home, Virginia Beach, VA)
Part-time (typically Fri-Sun, from 6-30 hours per week), $15–$18/hour DOE
A senior citizen couple seeks an experienced, energetic, compassionate, and patient individual to provide regular part-time household assistance as a Personal Care Aide (PCA). The husband is in his early 90s and has advance-stage Alzheimer’s disease. The wife is in her mid-80s, is her husband’s primary caregiver, and needs some assistance in managing her caregiving and household responsibilities.
Responsibilities and Duties
The PCA will be responsible for performing a variety of personal care and household activities that assist the clients with activities of daily living, including but not limited to:
- Housekeeping (e.g., vacuuming, dusting, sweeping or mopping floors, doing dishes, changing bed linens, doing laundry, cleaning and sanitizing the bathrooms and kitchen)
- Meal preparation (according to primary caregiver’s instructions)
- Assisting husband with all ADLs (dressing, grooming, toileting, transferring, daily exercise, medication administration). Hoyer lift experience necessary.
- Transporting and accompanying clients when needed on errands or to appointments
Qualifications and Skills
The PCA must possess the following minimum qualifications and skills:
- High school graduate or G.E.D. certificate
- Two years of experience as a PCA, caregiver, or home health aide (in homes or facilities)
- Experience assisting patients with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia
- Ability to read, write, speak, hear, and understand English
- Ability to bend, stoop, and lift heavy loads (> 50 lbs)
- Possess a valid driver’s license, current automobile insurance, and a clean automobile in good working condition.
- Pass a background check (criminal, financial, psychological, drug)
