Overview
The Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary seeks a passionate and experienced Outdoor Programs Manager to develop and implement engaging programs that connect people with nature. This part-time position will primarily focus on night hikes, trail guide volunteers, campouts, and canoe programs.
General Duties
- Function as the on-site program manager during specific events.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and ensure programs have adequate supplies.
- Ensure staff and volunteers receive appropriate training and communication.
- Keep paperwork, safety procedures, and forms up to date.
- Inspect and maintain canoes and related equipment for safety.
- Prepare program areas, materials, and supplies before and after events.
- Perform administrative duties, including scheduling, communication, and payment processing.
· Collaborate with the current lead to develop and implement training programs for volunteers.
- Meet or exceed safety and emotional welfare standards for participants.
- Enforce safety standards and protocols among staff and volunteers.
- Supervise staff and volunteers during programs.
- Assist with other educational programs as needed, including homeschool and weekend activities.

Physical Qualifications
Applicants must be able to:
- Walk/hike on uneven terrain for extended periods.
- Bend, kneel, and reach to set up programs and store supplies.
- Lift and carry objects over 50 lbs., including canoes.
- Paddle in canoes and kayaks on open water for extended periods.
- Work outside in various weather conditions.
Education and Experience
- Degree in Environmental Science, Outdoor Education, or a related field.
- 2-3 years of experience in environmental education, with a focus on outdoor activities like canoeing, camping, and hiking.
- Working knowledge of biological and ecological principles.
- Passion and knowledge of North Texas natural history.
- Experience developing and leading environmental education programs for diverse age groups.
- Patient and receptive attitude toward students of all ages.
- Current certifications in paddling/canoeing, first-aid, and/or lifeguarding a plus.
