Heartland has an immediate opening for a Residential Mortgage Underwriter at the Corporate Center in Whitehall, OH. This position is an in-office role.
In this highly visible role you will provide underwriting and assisting with credit risk processes for the bank’s residential and mortgage loan applications. Perform the necessary functions associated with reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating loan requests for credit worthiness and credit decisions (approve, modify, decline) in accordance with lending authority, regulations, investor guidelines, bank policies and procedures, risk philosophy and credit culture. Working in a team and collaborative setting, will provide credit and financial analysis for prospective and existing consumer borrowers. Make and assist with independent decisions through evaluation of borrower credit reports, financial statements / tax returns and other underwriting information. Contribute to portfolio performance and underwriting-based observations. A strong desire for developing and increasing credit proficiency is required to ensure an environment of continuous learning and incorporation of training in daily processes. Oversee, mentor and develop consumer underwriting team and provide, including providing feedback and coaching for operational excellence.
A typical day might include the following :
- Evaluate and ensure that all transactions are accurate, complete, and compliant.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of state and federal laws and regulations including bank secrecy, anti-money laundering, TRID, RESPA, Fair Lending and Truth in Lending laws and guidelines.
- Extensive knowledge of FNMA / FHLMC, FHA, VA and USDA program guidelines.
- VA LAPP-SAR and FHA DE Required.
- Experience analyzing financial statements for high-net-worth borrowers.
- Perform income and tax return analysis to determine ability to repay.
- Train and guide lenders and processors in underwriting and appraisal guidelines and use of Mortgage underwriting systems.
- Champion workflow processes to improve efficiencies.
- Provide support to regulatory exams, internal and external audits, and support FHLB workflow with reports and related exam functions.
- May assist with preparation of monthly reports such as exceptions tracking.
- Participate in all required training sessions for compliance and maintain adequate controls to ensure compliance with all statutes / regulations.
- Implement bank-directed policy and changes relating to regulatory amendments.
- Provide conditional approval to assist consumer loan processors and lenders toward approval.
- Manage FHLB workflow with reports and audit functions.
- Mentors, develops, and supports Underwriting team members including providing performance feedback.
