Estimator – Large-Scale Agriculture & Livestock Construction

We are seeking an experienced Estimator with a strong background in large-scale agriculture, livestock, and commercial livestock production construction to join our team. This role is critical in ensuring accurate cost estimates, trade partner bids, and material take-offs for feedlots, dairy farms, hog barns, poultry facilities, and other large-scale livestock production operations. The Estimator will be responsible for managing the financial forecasting of projects ranging from livestock housing and processing facilities to manure management systems and feed storage infrastructure.

From initial project conception through finalizing construction documents, the Estimator will ensure all cost assessments align with industry standards, client expectations, and project deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Design & Scope Review

  • Evaluate initial project scope, design plans, and specifications in collaboration with the Preconstruction Manager (PCM).
  • Identify and resolve scope gaps related to livestock-specific construction needs, ventilation systems, biosecurity measures, and waste management solutions.
  • Assess site-specific challenges, such as drainage requirements, soil conditions, animal welfare regulations, and environmental compliance.

2. Estimating & Cost Development

  • Analyze blueprints, engineering reports, and project specifications to determine labor, materials, and time requirements for livestock housing and handling facilities.
  • Prepare and issue vendor and subcontractor Requests for Quotes (RFQs), ensuring livestock-specific needs (e.g., reinforced flooring for high-traffic areas, climate control systems, waste treatment solutions) are met.
  • Compile and organize trade partner bids, ensuring accurate comparison and cost evaluation.
  • Develop detailed cost estimates, applying appropriate phase codes for livestock and agricultural construction categories.
  • Resolve bid discrepancies by gathering and verifying critical cost information.
  • Provide cost trend analysis and identify areas for potential savings without compromising quality.

3. Material Procurement & Bid Execution

  • Verify and adjust material take-offs to align with project specifications for barns, milking parlors, feed storage, and manure lagoons.
  • Coordinate with Account Managers, Project Managers, and the PCM to determine preferred vendors based on expertise in large-scale livestock and agricultural construction.
  • Transfer subcontractor bid details to the Project Manager for contract finalization and execution.
  • Work closely with purchasing teams to ensure estimates are converted into accurate material orders.

4. Project Review & Adjustments

  • Assist the PCM with change order pricing for scope modifications, unforeseen site conditions, or client-requested adjustments.
  • Conduct site visits to assess real-world conditions and verify project alignment with budgetary expectations.
  • Participate in pre- and post-construction meetings to refine cost-tracking strategies and identify efficiency opportunities for future projects.
  • Provide insights on project financials and suggest process improvements based on completed

livestock and commercial agricultural projects.

5. Additional Responsibilities

  • Manage the full estimating process from conceptual budgeting to final bid execution for feedlots, dairy operations, poultry houses, and processing plants.
  • Maintain strong industry knowledge by attending construction workshops and staying updated on advancements in large-scale livestock building techniques and materials.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a detail-oriented, self-motivated individual who thrives in fast-paced environments and understands the unique challenges of livestock facility construction estimating. The ideal candidate will:

  • Be proactive in identifying potential project risks and providing cost-effective solutions.
  • Communicate clearly with farmers, agribusiness owners, and trade partners.
  • Balance multiple projects while ensuring deadlines and budgets are met.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in estimating large-scale agricultural and livestock construction projects (e.g., dairy barns, hog operations, poultry facilities, feed mills, and manure management systems).
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with construction cost analysis, bidding, and budget forecasting.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure while meeting tight deadlines.

Working Environment

  • Position may be remote or based in our Columbus, Nebraska office.
  • Travel to job sites may be required, including walking on farmland, feedlots, and navigating livestock production facilities.
  • Work will involve both office-based estimating tasks and on-site construction evaluation.

Benefits & Growth Opportunities

  • Opportunity to contribute to high-impact livestock and commercial agricultural construction projects.
  • Professional development in estimating, budgeting, and project cost optimization.
  • Growth potential within the company to lead estimating teams and expand industry expertise.
