The Heartland Montessori Part-Time/Substitute Assistant Teacher shall perform those duties which are customarily performed by those in similar positions in other Montessori schools, the specific duties outlined in this job description, and other duties as assigned by the Guide or Head of School (HOS). This is a full-time position under the direct supervision of the Children’s House Guide, Toddler Community Guides, and/or Infant Program Guide.
QUALIFICATIONS
· High School diploma; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
· Montessori assistant training preferred; or general understanding of Montessori philosophy and willingness to learn
· 1 year experience in education-related or childcare profession
· Willing to take initiative and to accept change
· Friendly, enthusiastic, and professional demeanor
JOB REQUIREMENTS WHILE IN THE CLASSROOM
1. To understand and value the assistant’s role
· Understand the Assistant’s role in the classroom.
· Communicate any classroom concerns to the Guide in a professional manner
· Consistently reinforce and model the Guide’s interaction and communication with the children.
· Provide leadership in the classroom by modeling a professional and courteous relationship with the Guide
· Attend staff meetings, any agreed upon professional meetings, training sessions or faculty retreats, school events such as parent education; may be scheduled before or after school, or on weekends.
· Be responsible for the safety and physical well-being of the classroom children. The children are never to be left alone. Assist in emergency situations as needed.
2. To support the guide through appropriate observation, guidance, and intervention
· Observe children’s use of the materials and peer relationships
· Assist the children in developing independence
· Redirect and intervene based on observation and direction from the Guide
· Model grace & courtesy for the children
· Preserve & protect lessons that are given by the Guide
· Sub as needed in any classroom, as approved by HOS
· Understand or learn the essential components of Montessori philosophy
· Perform other duties as assigned by the Guide or HOS
3. To prepare and maintain the physical environment each day
· Prepare, clean, and sanitize materials as needed before the children arrive
· Keep environment beautiful and orderly throughout the day
· Keep materials in good repair and supplies fully stocked
4. To refer all parent concerns and questions to the guide
· Refer all parent communication to the Guide, unless other arrangements are agreed upon
· Understand, respect, and support strong relationships between the Guide and parents
5. To maintain clear and open lines of communication with the guide
· Willingly share concerns and ideas about the classroom environment with the Guide
Listen to constructive suggestions from the Guide, and participate in discussions and performance evaluations as required by the Guide or Head of School
Job Types: Part-time, Temporary
Pay: $17.00 - $18.00 per hour
