Safety Manager

Position Overview

Are you a dedicated safety professional that is looking to advance their career with Helm? As a Site Safety Manager, your primary function is to provide safety support for a specific project, or multiple projects based on the company’s needs. This individual may report to the Corporate Safety Director.

This position is for our national mechanical division which is responsible for the HVAC, Plumbing, and Piping scopes of work for new construction projects as well as remodel work in buildings such as K-12 schools, hospitals and associated healthcare buildings, high-rise buildings, and other commercial building types located throughout the Midwest. This role is initially for a mission critical project located in Beaver Dam, WI.

Key Responsibilities

• Interface and communicate with client representatives, subcontractors, tradesmen, and project teams.
• Implement on-site safety program responsibilities and duties.
• Provide technical assistance including policy or procedure development, revision, interpretation, and implementation; also provide method recommendations, alternative solutions, and issue resolution.
• Review project safety-related documents (i.e. Subcontractor Safety Plans and Job Hazard Analysis) and provide feedback to project teams and subcontractors.
• Plan and coordinate safety-related activities with the Project Team.
• Develop, revise, and conduct site-specific safety orientations.
• Conduct safety observations at the project site to ensure safety policies and procedures are implemented consistently.
• Document, notify and implement corrective action for on-site violations and disciplinary action.
• Identify needs, develop, and conduct training at project and company level.
• Participate and support incident investigation process including lessons learned process.
• Participate in start-up, pre-construction and other meetings with subcontractors and Project Team to communicate safety expectations.
• Work with project teams to verify insurance and contractual safety requirements are being met by subcontractors working on assigned projects.
• Safety-related documentation management as required.
• Relay safety-related communication to required parties (i.e., project team and all involved).
• Assist and coordinate as directed with OSHA and other regulatory agency interactions.
• Participation in Safety Department activities, including but not limited to weekly/monthly department meetings.
• Provide mentoring and feedback to all Helm employees.
• Additional assignments per Supervisor’s direction.

Requirements

• Must meet one of the following:

1.) Possess a 4-year degree in engineering, construction, or safety from an accredited university, plus a minimum of three years of direct safety oversight experience

2.) Possess a 2-year degree in engineering, construction, or safety from an accredited or industry recognized technical school, plus a minimum of three years of direct safety oversight experience

3.) Possess a professional certification in safety from an accredited or industry recognized certifying body, plus a minimum of three years of direct safety oversight experience

4.) Have a minimum of eight years of relevant industry and construction experience plus an additional minimum of three years of direct safety oversight experience

• Knowledge of construction related standards, requirements, and best practices (OSHA, healthcare, basic insurance); ability to implement company safety policies through planning and site visits required.
• Must possess at least one of the following certifications:

1,) Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

2.) Associate Safety Professional (ASP)

3.) Construction Health and Safety Technologist (CHST)

4.) Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)

5.) Graduate or Charted Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)

6.) Safety Trained Supervisor – Construction (STS-C)

7.) Bachelor’s Degree or Higher in EHS or an EHS related field

• Ability to create and conduct training for all levels of the organization.
• Must have successfully completed one of the following in the last three years:

1.) NEBOSH Certified/Diploma

2.) OSHA 30-Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training Course

• Working knowledge of Microsoft applications; Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook, etc.
• Computer and technology skills with emphasis on mobility
• Technical writing skills.
• Strong communication, organization and cognitive skills are essential.
• Must be able to work in a team environment.
• Capable of prioritizing and detail oriented.
• Willingness to travel based on project location.

Salary & Benefits

Range: $80,000 – $90,000
