Position Summary:
Hemphill County Hospital District is seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable EMS Billing Specialist to join our Patient Financial Services team. This role is responsible for accurately processing EMS transport claims and securing timely reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance, and private payers. The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in medical billing—preferably EMS-specific—and a commitment to compliance, efficiency, and outstanding service in a rural healthcare setting.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Submit timely and accurate EMS claims while ensuring compliance with billing regulations
- Verify patient insurance and obtain necessary documentation
- Resolve claim denials and follow up on outstanding or underpaid accounts
- Communicate effectively with payers, patients, and EMS staff regarding billing issues
- Prepare and issue patient statements; assist with payment arrangements and inquiries
- Monitor billing trends, reimbursement patterns, and account statuses
- Collaborate with EMS staff to ensure accurate documentation and coding
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and all regulatory guidelines
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
- Associate degree or medical billing certification (preferred)
- CPR certification through the American Heart Association (required or obtainable upon hire)
- At least 1 year of medical billing experience (EMS billing preferred)
- Solid understanding of healthcare reimbursement practices and insurance guidelines
- Familiarity with EHR and billing software; knowledge of CPT, ICD, and medical terminology
- Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills
- Ability to read and interpret technical materials, policies, and government regulations
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and documentation
- Comfortable managing multiple priorities and working both independently and collaboratively
- Maintains professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- 2 years of billing, coding, or revenue cycle experience in a healthcare setting
- Knowledge of ambulance service operations and EMS-specific billing challenges
Physical Requirements:
- Adequate hearing, speech, and vision to perform duties
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting, and reaching
- Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and complete job-related tasks
