The Hennepin County Information Technology (IT) Department is seeking for a student currently enrolled in an associate or bachelor's degree program to participate in a part-time IT internship as the monitoring and observability intern with the IT Operational Intelligence team. This position requires a level 3 security check as a requirement for employment.
The intern will collaborate with multiple technology groups across the organization to improve overall reliability of enterprise systems through effective collection of telemetry data, event correlation, and timely alerting of errors and issues. A large focus will be assisting in the deployment of our new expanded SaaS instance of Splunk Observability.Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus. Location and hours:
This position is remote. Remote workers may be required to come on-site an average of 0 to 12 days a year for work meetings, trainings, or for any other reasons that their supervisor may deem necessary (may include additional days for onboarding and new employee training). Supervisors will provide as much advance notice as practicable. Work hours are Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. The intern will work approximately 20/week. This internship will start in June 2025 with flexibility on start and end dates and will last one year in duration. While this position is designated as remote, hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota.

In this position, you will:
- Work with teammates to collect and translate business requirements
- Assist in configuring new data streams for monitoring
- Create meaningful visualizations for technical and business teams
- Maintain documentation related to monitoring solutions
- Assist in support and maintenance of monitoring tools
- Current enrollment for the 2025-2026 fall academic school year in an associate or bachelor's degree program in IT, computer science, information security, networking, information system management, or another closely related field
- Access to reliable internet and self-supported remote office space
- Experience with:
- Server hardware, configurations, and operating systems (e.g., Windows Server 2016, 2019, SQL Server, Linux)
- Networking hardware and configurations (TCP/IP, LAN, WAN, Firewalls, OSI Model, etc.)
- Office productivity tools (Outlook, Teams, Microsoft Office)
- Ability to:
- Independently research technical topics using relevant and accurate sources
- Work independently and in a collaborative environment
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities
- Analytical and critical thinking skills
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
