Job Title : Surgical Technician First Assistant

Job Specialty : Neuro (Spine and Brain) or Ortho (Total Joints)

Job Duration : 13 weeks

Shift : 0700-1730, Monday to Friday; On Call 3-5 weekends per 6 weeks (8 hours), 4-6 weekdays per 6 weeks (2 hours)

Guaranteed Hours : 40 hours per week

Experience : At least one year of experience required

License : Not specified

Certifications :

BLS provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
American Red Cross (ARC) CPR for Professional Rescuers card is acceptable upon hire, but renewal must be with a BLS provider card from AHA.

Must-Have : Surgical Assistant credentialed from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)

Education :

High School Diploma / GED with 2 years of experience, or Associate's degree, or Technical degree required.

Job Description :

Position patients to provide the best exposure for surgical procedures using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.

Provide visualization of the operative site using appropriate methods, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.

Utilize appropriate techniques to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.

Assist with body plane closures, application of wound dressings, and securing of drainage systems.

Assist in room cleanup and the removal of soiled case carts, supplies, and trash from OR rooms as needed at the completion of surgical cases.

Participate as a surgical team member in the preparation of the surgical suite according to surgeon's preference cards with appropriate instruments, resources, and supplies.

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Must be able to work in a stressful environment.
