Hernando Animal Clinic and Surgery Center is seeking a Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant with relevant experience to join our team. Location: 2445 MT PLEASANT RD • HERNANDO
Schedule: Full-Time, Monday – Friday 7:30a -5:30p, rotating Saturdays (schedule flexibility available, accustomed to a 4 day work week)
Pay Range:$14 - $17 based on experience
Compensation for Certified Technicians: Competitive salary based on credentials and experience
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Monitoring:
- Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care of surgical patients, including monitoring vitals, administering medications, and providing pain management.
- Perform routine clinical procedures including blood draws, urinalysis, and fecal analysis.
- Perform and interpret diagnostic tests such as radiographs (X-rays), electrocardiograms (EKG), and bloodwork.
- Administer vaccines, medications, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian.
- Manage hospitalized patients, including feeding, administering fluids, and IV catheter placement.
- Prepare patients for surgery, including anesthesia induction, intubation, and monitoring throughout the surgical procedure.
- Assist veterinarians during surgeries and dental procedures, ensuring the proper handling of instruments and maintaining sterile technique.
- Properly manage surgical instruments, equipment, and operating room procedures.
- Educate pet owners on treatment plans, medications, aftercare instructions, and preventative health practices.
- Provide clear communication to clients regarding diagnostic results and treatment options, helping them understand their pets' needs.
- Provide clients with detailed estimates for procedures, treatments, and other veterinary services.
- Perform a variety of diagnostic and laboratory procedures, including fecal exams, blood draws, cytology, and skin scrapings.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as microscopes, blood analyzers, and diagnostic machines.
- Take and process radiographs (X-rays) with accurate positioning to ensure diagnostic quality.
- Maintain detailed, accurate electronic medical records (EMR) for each patient, ensuring that all necessary information is updated and complete.
- Assist with inventory management, including ordering, stocking, and ensuring that medical supplies are readily available.
- Provide immediate response to emergency cases, performing triage, stabilization, and initial care for critically ill or injured patients.
- Assist veterinarians with emergency treatments and procedures.
- Assist with client intake by gathering relevant history, entering information into the patient's chart, and preparing them for examination.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including cleaning surgical instruments, patient kennels, and other clinic areas as needed.
Experience:- At least 2 years of experience as a veterinary technician or veterinary assistant in a clinical setting (experience in surgery and emergency care is a plus).
Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), LVT, or RVT is preferred, but we also welcome applications from experienced veterinary assistants.- Proficient in clinical skills, including anesthesia monitoring, radiography, and laboratory work.
Skills:
Anesthesia monitoring and surgery assistance.- Familiarity with veterinary software and practice management systems (e.g., Avimark, IDEXX, etc.).
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent communication with clients, team members, and veterinarians.
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent formal training is highly preferred.
Veterinary Technician Certification (if applicable) is a plus, and we offer financial assistance for employees wishing to pursue certification.
Physical Requirements:- Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to handle animals, including those that may be anxious or aggressive.
Advanced Knowledge: Familiarity with radiology, anesthesia protocols, and surgical assistance.

Desire to Continue Learning: Willingness to pursue further education through continuing education opportunities or certification.
