High Valley Dermatology is seeking a detail-oriented and dedicated Laboratory Specimen Technician to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for processing dermatological specimens, maintaining quality control, and ensuring accurate documentation.
Key Responsibilities:
Specimen Reception and Accessioning:
- Receive skin biopsies and other dermatological specimens from clinicians, ensuring patient information is accurate and samples are properly logged into the laboratory information system (LIS).
- Verify specimen integrity and completeness, addressing any discrepancies or issues.
Grossing and Tissue Processing:
- Conduct a gross examination of specimens, documenting tissue characteristics, measurements, and visible abnormalities.
- Dissect and prepare tissue samples for further processing.
- Process tissue samples through various methods such as fixation, dehydration, clearing, and embedding in paraffin blocks.
Sectioning and Staining:
- Slice thin tissue sections from paraffin blocks using a microtome.
- Mount tissue sections onto slides and perform routine histological staining (e.g., H&E staining).
- As needed, perform special stains or immunohistochemical staining as required by the pathologist.
Quality Control:
- Monitor quality control throughout the specimen processing workflow, including proper handling of reagents, staining consistency, and equipment calibration.
- Identify and report any quality control issues to the supervisor to ensure high-quality results.
Data Entry and Record Keeping:
- Accurately enter patient, specimen, and processing data into the LIS.
- Maintain meticulous records of specimen processing, including accession numbers, staining protocols, and relevant observations.
Laboratory Maintenance:
- Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, work areas, and supplies according to established protocols.
- Follow safety guidelines and proper disposal procedures for hazardous materials.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree in laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent education and training OR 60 semester hours (or equivalent) from an accredited institution, including 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology or science courses (6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours in any combination of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology).
- Strong attention to detail, with a high degree of accuracy in data entry.
- Ability to work independently while following established procedures.
