What are the responsibilities and job description for the Copywriter/Content Writer position at Highland Group?
Job Title: Copywriter / Content Writer
Years of Experience: 5
About the Agency
Highland Group is a full-service brand and marketing studio. For nearly 20 years, we’ve been helping people, businesses and communities make their mark, and make that mark matter. We do this by building brand awareness, generating and nurturing leads, engaging prospects, celebrating company culture and communicating with customers.
Our talented team of designers, art directors, copywriters, illustrators, interactive developers, digital strategists, brand strategists, account executives and project leaders solve business problems with creativity, empathy and practicality.
About the Role:
What we’re seeking is a storyteller who thrives in the intersection of branding and marketing. Our clients want their stories told in engaging, authentic and articulate ways and across every platform. And you're the one that can absorb their complex industries and translate it into written solutions that are easily understood. You understand that in marketing, it’s more than words for words sake. Strategy is everything, and every character (literally) counts.
As part of the creative team, you create the links between the account strategy and the creative vision. You see the big picture, diving into the problem-solving nature of taking the complicated and creating the messaging that will move audiences. And you, as a natural ringleader - gather all of the appropriate teammates together to reach the inspired solution.
The Day-to-Day Experience
Here’s what this job looks like:
- Strategic Communication. We work with clients in times of growth or transition, times when communication is everything. We need a partner to build a strategic communications framework. This partner is a critical cog in tailoring copy to our client's audiences in each stage of the customer journey.
- Ad Writing. We’re a full-service ad agency. That means we need ads that perform just as well in print and on the radio and TV as they do online and on social channels. You want to write snappy headlines and make sure every ad matches the medium.
- Editorial Writing. Interview our client’s customers to help shape and celebrate their experiences with engaging storytelling.
- Content Writing. Bringing people through a complex sales process can mean lots of words. From blog posts to sales presentations to collateral and catalogs, technical topics and big word counts don’t intimidate you and you understand the art of the hook.
- Editor and Proofreader. You have strong feelings about grammar, punctuation and oxford commas. You know and love AP style. You use professional proofreader's marks with relish.
- Team Player*. Participate in a digital audit? Attend discovery sessions with a new client?
Interview SMEs for a new project on a topic you know very little about? Work side-by-side with your team to do content planning? These activities sound delightful to you.
What You’ll Need to be Successful: We’re looking for someone with five years background in marketing, communications, PR or journalism. A person with exceptional written and verbal communication skills. A self-starter who loves storytelling and can dive into the technical and articulate it for every audience and every platform. A naturally curious individual who enjoys learning new topics. A student of their craft. A leader who is quick on their feet, loves the details, deadline driven and thrives in a fast-paced, high-energy open office. A proven professional who is interested in being part of a group that is constantly evolving to do and be better.
About the Team: We are HG. It’s more than our URL. It’s a reflection of our strongest belief: personnel is policy. Here, you’ll find committed, energetic team members who practice our core behaviors: be curious, be awesome, be essential. We Are HG is a promise that you’ll join a team that loves what they do, and who they do it with. We’re a group that strives to do the best, most challenging work in partnership with our clients, perform at the top of our game, deliver results and make a difference. It’s not just a place to work, it’s a place to build a career.
You’ll find us in a beautifully restored mid-century modern building in the heart of Grand Rapids’ East Hills neighborhood. We’re proud to be a certified B Corporation because what we do for each other and our planet matters more than any shiny statue on a shelf.
