What are the responsibilities and job description for the Therapeutic Mentor position at Highland Health Systems?
SUMMARY:
The Therapeutic Mentor’s role is to provide structured one-on-one interventions to a youth and his/her family that are designed to ameliorate behavioral health-related conditions that prevent age-appropriate social functioning. The Therapeutic Mentor helps to ensure the youth’s success in navigating various social contexts, learning new skills, and making functional progress. The Therapeutic Mentor offers supervision of these interactions and engages the youth in discussions about strategies for effective handling of peer and adult interactions.
Primary Functions:
- Support, coach and train the youth in age-appropriate behaviors
- Train, coach and support the youth to demonstrate problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
- Provide linkages to recreational and social activities
- Provide interventions and support to achieve established treatment goals that are assigned as part of an integrated service team for the youth.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with internal staff, community resources and stakeholders
- Responsible for understanding and adhering to all internal policies & procedures, training expectations
- Must have capacity to work flexible hours including evening/weekend availability based on the needs of the youth
- Must be able to drive to youth’s homes, community events, and meetings at service provider offices or schools as needed
- Build collaborative partnerships with others demonstrating a non-adversarial advocacy approach
- Participate as needed in team meetings
- Ability to model a strength based approach and utilize collaborative problem solving techniques with others
- Utilize youth’s strengths and resiliency traits in problem solving and brainstorming solutions
- Ability to recognize strengths of collaborative partners
- Perform all other duties as assigned

- Ability to establish effective working and professional relationships with participants, participants’ family, referral sources, staff, and the general public.

- Must demonstrate the ability to work well with staff and participants in a polite, respectful and dignified manner.

- Support, coach and teach developmentally-appropriate behaviors, interpersonal communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution, relating appropriately to others in recreational and social activities
- Must have capacity to work flexible hours including some evening/weekend availability based on the needs of the parent
- Must be able drive to families’ homes, community events, and meetings at service provider offices or schools as needed
- May provide transportation to parents and family members as needed.
- Must have skills necessary to engage and work with others from diverse ethnic and cultural groups.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must have good organizational and time management skills
- Read, understand, and abide by agency Policies and Procedures, Employee Handbook and Training Expectations.
- Assist families in researching their assigned health plan on-line so families a greater understanding of what their plans offer in terms of coverage.
- Attend at minimum bi-monthly individual supervision with Program Manager.
- Meet all training requirements within expected timeframes as determined by Project Supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a valid Alabama driver’s license, dependable transportation and proof of automobile insurance
- Must have basic typing/computer processing skills
- Must meet the qualifications as defined by the Alabama Department of Mental Health
