What are the responsibilities and job description for the Non-profit Dog Rescue Facilities Manager position at Highland Lakes Canine Rescue?
Working as a key member of the Highland Lakes Canine Rescue management team, the Facilities Manager is responsible for the safety and security of the shelter buildings and grounds, facilities and property maintenance, and after-hours safety and security of our dogs. The Facilities Manager reports to the Executive Director, HLCR.
The Facilities Manager lives onsite in HLCR provided furnished housing, including utilities and housekeeping.
Duties and Responsibilities
-- Monitors the facilities and property and informs Executive Director and/or the Shelter Operations Manager of any repairs and service needed to buildings, grounds, pens, fencing, HVAC, plumbing, internet, phone, pest control, etc. Makes minor repairs if possible. Jointly determines priorities for needed repairs and service.
-- Determines if professional service providers are needed to address maintenance issues. Researches and obtains estimates for services and supplies needed for shelter maintenance and operation and presents information to the Executive Director. Oversees vendors and service providers working on shelter grounds, equipment and facilities.
-- Identifies needs and opportunities for volunteers to participate in kennel, pen and grounds maintenance. Works with the Board volunteer coordinator regarding appropriate volunteers and oversees volunteers working at the shelter.
-- Ensures fire equipment and systems are in place and working properly in all shelter buildings. Serves as “first responder” in case of fire or other emergency. Contacts the Executive Director and Shelter Operations Manager and implements established evacuation procedures if needed.
-- Monitors weather. Adjusts electrical and water equipment as needed. Assists staff in moving dogs into kennel buildings as needed. Ensures outside dog houses are properly equipped for daily use during the winter.
-- Keeps trails and pen areas mowed. Sprays pens on a regular schedule to prevent fleas and ticks. Sprays and disinfects quarantine pens after use to prepare for new incoming dogs. Ensures all chemicals used are safe for use with dogs and people. Ensures dog houses and feeding crates are in good repair and working properly.
-- Keeps garages and equipment storage areas in an orderly, clean condition.
-- Maintains shelter vehicles and equipment in good working order (including oil changes, registration, licensing and tires). Ensures vehicles are fueled and ready for use.
-- Locks gate each night and opens the gate each morning. If people without appointments show up at the shelter to look at dogs or surrender a dog, explains our procedures and sends them on their way.
-- Performs the evening kennel check every night, usually between 8pm and 10pm. Ensures guillotine doors are closed and dogs are safe and “put to bed” for the night. Ensures all dogs have water. Removes food and water as needed if a dog is scheduled for a veterinary procedure requiring such. Observes dogs during evening kennel check and reports any medical concerns to the Shelter Operations Manager or, if needed, the Executive Director. Contacts HLCR’s emergency vet service if needed and advises the Shelter Operations Manager. Does a final walk-around check of the dog kennels every night before retiring.
-- Purchases or picks up dog/puppy food, bottled water, cleaning supplies, etc. as needed.
-- Picks up all garbage from kennel building and Critical Care Unit, including poop cans, and installs new liners as needed (generally twice a week). Ensures garbage is the receptacle for weekly pick up.
-- Works with the Shelter Operations Manager and Executive Director regarding participation in adoption and fundraising events, as needed. Loads and transports dogs and helps set up/take down for other events as needed. Assists with special events, if needed, to transport and/or handle dogs at the event.
-- May take dogs on field trips as requested by the Shelter Operations Manager. Occasionally transports dogs for vet appointments if other staff is unavailable or unable.
-- Coordinates time off/time away with the Shelter Operations Manager and Executive Director to ensure duties are covered.
-- Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions

-- Exposure to all weather conditions when working at the shelter and at outdoor events.
-- Required to live onsite in HLCR housing
-- Must be present at the shelter overnight, except with approved time off.
-- Must be present at times to treat and/or minister to dogs late evening, except with approved time off.
Skills, Abilities and Knowledge
-- Basic skills in plumbing, electrical, grounds maintenance, HVAC and appliance repairs.
-- Skill with a variety of tools and equipment relevant to duties.
-- Ability to identify and select technical, maintenance suppliers and service providers.
-- Knowledge of animal care with a focus on dogs.
-- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.
-- Must hold a valid Texas Driver’s License and have an insurable driving record.
-- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of team members, volunteers and donors.
-- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and adapt to changing needs.
-- Ability to work on own initiative and meet deadlines.
Compensation is negotiable and includes a single family house on shelter property, utilities, internet and weekly cleaning.
About Highland Lakes Canine Rescue
Highland Lakes Canine Rescue is a non-profit 501(c)(3) no-kill rescue shelter for dogs in Marble Falls, Texas. We rescue dogs who are “at risk” in shelters or with Animal Control Offices throughout the Central Texas area due to treatable medical or behavioral needs that make them less likely to be adopted. Our shelter provides a kennel facility, outdoor pens and walking trails. We are also blessed with an active and passionate group of volunteers who work tirelessly supporting HLCR and its mission.

- Fully vaccinates every one of our dogs
- Takes in AND TREATS heartworm positive, sick and injured dogs so they can recover and become someone’s new best friend

- Fully reviews applicants who want to adopt our dogs to ensure both adopter and dog are a good match
- Follows-up with adopters to help both the adopter and the dog transition successfully
- Allows our adopted dogs to be returned to us under certain circumstances so we can work to find them more suitable homes
- Has 24-hour onsite staff caring for our dogs
