The overall purpose of this position is to work with HPUMC ministries and congregants to create opportunities for volunteerism that aligns with the HPUMC Mission and Vision. HPUMC Outreach aims to engage people in fighting poverty, promoting justice, and serving others. HPUMC’s mission is to help people become deeply devoted followers of Jesus Christ. Working Hours: This full-time position will work an anticipated 36 hours per week.
Anticipated Schedule: Monday-Thursday 8:30am – 5:00pm (including an unpaid 30-minute lunch) and Fridays 8:30am – 12:30pm are office hours. This position requires flexibility regarding working hours as evening and weekend hours are typical for Outreach and Churchwide events.
- During certain times of the year additional hours may be necessary to meet the demands of the job. All church staff will be asked to support and serve for religious holidays and worship services including Christmas Eve and Easter, as well as Back-to-School Sunday, Serving Day and others as requested. Presence on occasional Sundays is also required to ensure that one has a firsthand understanding of the church culture as well as to be available to teach Sunday morning classes or to staff events
- Occasional travel on mission trips in the US and abroad may be required (anticipated up to two weeks per year)
- There may be times where work is required outside of regular working hours to help with other departments serving projects
Job Responsibilities and Duties:
- Develop strategies for HPUMC ministries and congregants to increase volunteer participation with our partners who fight poverty
- Outreach and Churchwide Special Events
- Lead all internal efforts around Serving Day and coordinate partner activities with other Outreach staff
- Plan, coordinate, and execute all aspects of quarterly Outreach Partner Events
- Lead Churchwide serving opportunities, including drives and serving opportunities run in conjunction with Advent Festival, Men’s/Women’s Lunches, Galentines, Blessing of the Animals, Etc.
- Help maintain a calendar of church and department events that will include an Outreach service component
- Volunteer Opportunities, Tracking, and Appreciation
- Maintain documentation of service projects and participation in all service events
- Collaborate with Outreach Coordinators to create and lead efforts to ensure volunteer appreciation is included in all areas of Outreach serving/volunteering
- Coordinate with various ministries in efforts to recognize service and volunteering
- Maintain and manage an updated list of partner volunteer opportunities
- Communicate with other ministries on key service opportunities, including Small Groups, Youth, Sunday School Classes, etc.
- Field donation inquiries throughout the year; oversee and coordinate in-kind donations to ensure proper mechanisms are in place to appropriately receive and account for donations and expenses
- Oversee referral process for neighbors requesting assistance from HPUMC and keep an updated list of resources
- Partner with other Outreach team members to create a monthly newsletter with upcoming opportunities, celebrating volunteers and applicable updates
- Serve as HPUMC liaison with Project Unity in the organization and execution of Together We Dine events
- Participate in coordination of the Disaster Case Management program of HPUMC when activated to assist congregation members and our community in times of need
- Participate with the HPUMC Outreach Committee
- Attend all scheduled HPUMC Outreach Committee meetings and provide partner information requested by lay committee members
- Provide evidence and feedback on volunteer metrics for Outreach as a whole and individual partners
Education and Desired Skills:
- Bachelor's degree required, Education or certification in relevant field (social work, public policy, non-profit leadership, etc.) a plus
- Two years’ experience working in ministry or a social service organization preferred
- Two years experience in event planning and organizing preferred
- Excellent computer skills; proficiency in email, internet, and preferred software applications
- Budgeting skills
- High degree of initiative and accountability
- Strong interpersonal, communication and organization skills
- Strong writing, editing, and proofing skills
- High level of cultural sensitivity and tolerance
- Good vision and hearing skills, ability to drive to needed destinations
- Good overall health, ability to travel to locations with limited medical resources
- Comfortable working in the developing world and staying in group lodging with very basic amenities
- Ability to manage in high intensity, high stress environments and remain calm
- Flexible and adaptable in changing circumstances
- Ability to travel internationally; current, valid United States passport
- Ability and willingness to receive vaccinations that may be required for serving locally or globally
