The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining EHS programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Required Qualifications:
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining EHS programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This role promotes a culture of safety, health, and environmental stewardship throughout the Highland organization, working proactively to identify, mitigate, and prevent risks in the workplace.
Key Responsibilities
- EHS Programs:
- Implement and manage Highland EHS policies and procedures as needed.
- Maintain systems for reporting, investigating, and tracking incidents, injuries, and near misses.
- Track and analyze EHS performance metrics to identify trends and opportunities for improvement
- Compliance Management:
- Ensure adherence to OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements.
- Maintain and update safety and environmental permits, licenses, and records as needed.
- Prepare and submit reports to regulatory agencies as required.
- Conduct job hazard analyses (JHAs) and safety assessments for non-routine tasks or new equipment.
- Conduct daily inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits to maintain compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
- Stay up to date with industry best practices and regulatory updates
- Training and Communication:
- Deliver training programs to educate employees on EHS policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Conduct new employee orientations on EHS policies.
- Raise awareness of workplace safety culture and promote employee engagement in EHS initiatives through clear communication and participation opportunities.
- Risk Identification and Mitigation:
- Identify workplace hazards and implement control measures to minimize risks.
- Perform routine workplace inspections to identify unsafe conditions.
- Perform root cause analyses for incidents and develop corrective/preventive action plans.
- Conduct internal EHS audits and address and resolve deficiencies promptly.
- Incident Investigation and Reporting
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to identify root causes.
- Prepare detailed reports and recommendations to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain records of incidents and corrective actions.
- Environmental Stewardship:
- Manage waste disposal, recycling, and other sustainability initiatives.
- Conduct daily Method 9 Visual Emissions observations and report and correct any non-compliance emissions.
- Maintain EPA Method 9 certification for leadership positions.
- Maintain environmental records (air permit, stormwater, SWPPP)
- Develop programs to reduce the organization’s environmental impact, including energy conservation and pollution prevention.
Required Qualifications:
- A working knowledge of federal and state environmental and safety laws along with regulations, record keeping and reporting requirements.
- Experience in Title 5 Air Permit and certified to conduct daily EPA Method 9 Visual Emission reports.
- Familiarity with ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems.
- Degree in Environmental, Safety, or equivalent field (experience may be substituted).
- Organization and prioritization skills.
- Manufacturing experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
