Job Overview
Performs duties developing and updating maps and other graphic material using the Geographic Information System (GIS) or other mapping / cartographic computer software and hardware.

Duties and Responsibilities

Creates and maintains GIS layers to ensure spatial and temporal accuracy and produces hard copy or PDF maps.Researches deeds and legal descriptions to clarify data; notes discrepancies in various mapping data, and recommends corrective action.Produces digital cadastral, infrastructural, environmental points of interest and various other data as needed for maps utilizing survey notes, legal descriptions and other recorded instruments, and assigns symbols to appropriate maps.Assists in digital organization, inventorying, and locating maps to ensure accessibility.Interprets aerial imagery to identify infrastructure and natural features to update database maps.Geocodes coordinates using the correct projection and datum translations.Job Specifications
Knowledge of digital cartographic techniques.Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Access, Word, and / or Acrobat Standard.Some knowledge of land codes and surveying practices.Skill in the use and operation of computer peripheral equipment such as scanners and plotters.Ability to read and interpret aerial imagery, maps, deeds and legal descriptions.Ability to work effectively with others.Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus in order to read computer screens and printouts.This position is primarily sedentary.Work Category

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; ANDOne year of computerized or manual map drawing experience; ORFifteen (15) semester hours from an accredited college or university in computerized mapping, computerized drafting, computer programming, cartography and / or GIS, with at least nine (9) semester hours in computerized mapping, cartography and / or GIS; ORSuccessful completion of a Vocational or Technical Training Program in computerized mapping, cartography or GIS; ORAn equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies listed above.Emergency Management Responsibilities
In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department, the County's Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency / disaster.
