About this role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Underwriting Technical Analyst to support the strategic and operational needs of our Property & Casualty (P&C) underwriting department. This role focuses on leveraging data from diverse sources, including competitor filings, internal datasets, and third-party datasets, to develop actionable recommendations that shape underwriting strategies. The ideal candidate will excel in SQL, data analysis, and synthesizing complex information into impactful insights and will have a knowledge of Personal Lines Homeowners Insurance products.
What You'll Do:
Data Analysis & Insights:
- Use SQL to query and analyze data from internal systems and make recommendations based on your analysis
- Conduct comprehensive analyses of underwriting performance, market trends, and risk data to uncover opportunities for optimization
- Synthesize large datasets into clear and actionable insights to inform underwriting strategies
Strategic Recommendations:
- Collaborate with underwriting leadership to translate data findings into strategic initiatives and policy updates
- Monitor industry trends, regulatory developments, and competitor activities to support competitive positioning
- Develop data-driven risk selection models and pricing guidelines to enhance underwriting effectiveness
Training & Knowledge Sharing:
- Act as a subject matter expert on technical data utilization and interpretation within the underwriting department
- Act as the liaison between the Underwriting Department and other technical departments within Hippo, such as Engineering and Data Science
- Develop resources to support the integration of data-driven decision-making in underwriting practices
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Partner with engineering, data science, and product teams to improve data integration and reporting capabilities
- Facilitate access to external data sources and ensure their effective use in underwriting processes
- Present findings and strategic recommendations to stakeholders, ensuring clarity and actionable outcomes
Technical Excellence:
- Maintain and enhance SQL scripts, reporting dashboards, and data workflows to streamline operations
- Ensure data integrity, compliance, and accuracy across all analyses and reports
- Identify opportunities for automation and process improvement in data management and analysis
Must Haves:
- Bachelor's degree in business, Data Science, Finance, Insurance, or a related field
- 3 years of experience in P&C underwriting, data analysis, or a related technical role
- Proficiency in SQL and experience with databases
- Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and advanced Excel skills
- Understanding of P&C insurance products, underwriting practices, and risk assessment
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to convey insights effectively to diverse audiences
Nice to Haves:
- Experience working with competitor filings and third-party data sources (e.g., ISO, S&P Global, AM Best)
- Professional designations (e.g., CPCU, ARM) or advanced analytics training
