Basic Function: Automation Systems engineering consists of the design, development and introduction of systems to effectively utilize state-of-the-art design concepts encompassing various engineering and related Automation schemes and associated products.
The senior automation engineer reports directly to the Director of Engineering. This role is developed to ensure a consistent, coordinated and cohesive project engineering approach to Automation, Micro SCADA and communications systems and 61850 type projects.
The senior automation engineer will engage in technically specialized phases of activities involving one or more engineering disciplines. Direct major engineering efforts that potentially have substantial impact on current engineering projects, future developments and customers. Design and develop complex systems using state of the art technology using primarily Hitachi Energy products. Must also have experience and knowledge with other vendor technologies and understand the benefits of each design system. Assist with input to customer proposals and make recommendations to project costs budgets. Proactively seek, develop and implement initiatives to cost effectively achieve goals and ensure utmost customer satisfaction and quality.
Primary responsibilities for engineering include, but are not limited to, the following:
The Senior Automation Engineer is responsible for developing and design as related to Automation & Communications, for all types of Customers.
- Plan, schedule assigned work using establish processes to ensure on time delivery and quality. Take appropriate measures to ensure work is completed on schedule and within cost estimates.
- Manage your time efficiently and utilization of support resources in response to fluctuating workloads, changing priorities and unforeseen problems.
- Provide complex technical and business advice on issues of major importance, to peer Engineers within the department & business unit. Engage with customers involving such factors as systems development, advanced technology studies and tests, specifications and other business considerations.
- Provide input with decisions that have a significant impact on future engineering and business development efforts.
- Conduct meetings with customers involving such issues as design modifications and inform them of developments that have the potential for optimizing their operations.
- Provide leadership, as necessary, resolve design conflicts in order to reach mutual satisfaction and agreement to protect Hitachi Energy's interests.
- Travel up to 40% of the time to various client sites.
Complexity of Tasks: Major Responsibilities in the Project Execution:
- Manage your time effectively to specific projects and ensure you meet Scope, specifications and budgeted cost requirements for all PG Automation projects per the master project schedule.
- Resolve engineering and design issues on each project, with emphasis on safety, on-time delivery, quality, and sound commercial guidelines and customer specifications.
- Work with the respective Project Managers to establish project specific guidelines, reporting and document formats for review and approval.
- Responsible for coordinating Engineering support for all assigned projects which include the following deliverables:
- Project design criteria
- Review of the Automation/Protection general arrangement
- Electrical Engineering design concept
- Automation & Communication engineering design
- Material and Equipment specifications
- Equipment documentation reviews
- Development of Sub-Contractor scope of work documents
- Work with the respective Engineers to review the engineering generated documentation to ensure that it is in general compliance with the applicable project guidelines, customer specifications, governing national standards and sound engineering judgment before it is subjected to the Customer approval process.
- Requires balancing depth of engineering analyses against time and cost constraints and determining proper level of technical detail to release to customers.
- Requires ability to offer advice regarding major projects and development efforts to influence decisions of senior management that impact current and future business with Hitachi Energy customers.
- Must have excellent communications and writing skills as well as tact and professionalism working with others.
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related field 10 to 16 years' experience; alternatively, a special combination of education and experience and/or demonstrated accomplishments. Masters in Electrical Engineering and/or Professional Engineering License or certification preferred
