Primary Function of the Position
Under the direction of the President and CEO, the Vice President (VP) of Development and Impact leads fundraising, grant writing, and donor relations to secure financial support and ensure the organization’s continued growth and sustainability. This role is key in managing fundraising campaigns, cultivating relationships with donors and funders, and executing strategies that support both current services and future expansion.
The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, integrity, and a proven track record of high performance. They must align with our outcomes-driven culture and understand the unique challenges faced by immigrant and refugee communities. The successful candidate will bring experience managing a multi-million-dollar portfolio, including individual donors, community partnerships, government grants, private foundations, and online fundraising efforts.
Position Responsibilities
Fundraising Strategy and Campaign Management
- Develop and Execute Fundraising Plans: Create and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies aligned with the organization’s mission, vision, and financial goals. This may include annual campaigns, major gifts, planned giving, and capital campaigns.
- Manage Fundraising Events: Organize and oversee fundraising events such as galas, auctions, and donor appreciation events to raise awareness and funds for the organization. This will entail collaborating with the Communications team to create marketing materials, such as brochures, newsletters, and digital content, to promote fundraising efforts and communicate with donors.
- Drive Revenue Growth: Identify new revenue streams and innovative fundraising approaches, such as digital campaigns or peer-to-peer fundraising, to diversify financial support.
- Explore New Fundraising Opportunities: Keep abreast of new trends in philanthropy, digital fundraising, and social media to identify innovative opportunities for fundraising and donor engagement.
- Leverage Technology: Utilize fundraising software and tools to streamline processes, track donor information, and enhance donor engagement.
Grant Writing and Management
- Research and Apply for Grants: Oversee the identification and submission of grant proposals to foundations, government agencies, and other funding entities. Ensure compliance with grant requirements and reporting. Grant writing as needed.
- Monitor Grant Compliance: Ensure that grant funds are used appropriately and that programs funded by grants meet established objectives and comply with donor/funder expectations.
Major Gifts and Donor Cultivation
- Cultivate and Steward Donors: Develop relationships with current and prospective major donors, ensuring consistent communication, engagement, and recognition.
- Solicit Major Gifts: Meet with high-net-worth individuals, foundations, and corporations to solicit major gifts or pledges. Develop tailored giving strategies for each donor.
- Planned Giving: Oversee the organization’s planned giving programs and encourage donors to include the nonprofit in their wills or estate plans.
Donor Stewardship and Retention
- Engage Donors and Foster Long-Term Relationships: Build and sustain relationships with all donor levels by acknowledging their support, updating them on the impact of their contributions, and providing meaningful stewardship.
- Donor Recognition: Develop a recognition program to ensure that donors receive acknowledgment for their contributions, such as naming opportunities, donor walls, and special recognition events.
- Maintain Donor Databases: Ensure that donor information is kept up to date, accurate, and accessible for effective engagement and stewardship efforts.
Team Leadership and Collaboration
- Lead Development Team: Supervise and mentor fundraising staff, volunteers, and event coordinators to ensure a high level of performance and collaboration.
- Collaboration with Leadership: Work closely with executive leadership to align fundraising goals with the organization’s strategic objectives.
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors to identify key prospects and engage in major donor cultivation efforts. Provide the board with training and resources to support fundraising goals.
- Keep the President and CEO, and executive team informed on fundraising progress, challenges, and successes, and advise on strategic fundraising decisions.
- Collaborate Across Departments: Work closely with Communications, Finance, and program teams to ensure alignment in fundraising and donor engagement efforts.
- Recruit and Retain Talent: Attract and retain top development talent, ensuring the team is well-positioned to meet the organization's fundraising goals.
- Volunteer Coordination: Engage and manage volunteers who assist with fundraising initiatives, such as event planning, donor outreach, and communications.
Financial Oversight and Reporting
- Budgeting and Financial Management: Oversee the development department's budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to maximize fundraising efforts and outcomes.
- Track and Analyze Fundraising Metrics: Regularly review performance data, track progress against fundraising goals, and report on fundraising outcomes to executive leadership and the board.
Compliance and Ethical Standards
- Ensure Ethical Fundraising Practices: Ensure that all fundraising practices adhere to legal requirements, ethical standards, and nonprofit regulations, including transparency, accountability, and donor confidentiality.
- Stay Updated on Tax Laws and Regulations: Keep abreast of changes in tax laws, charitable giving regulations, and other legal matters that affect fundraising strategies.
Reporting and Evaluation
- Monitor and Report on Fundraising Metrics: Analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) for fundraising efforts, such as donor retention, event ROI, and total funds raised, and report findings to senior leadership.
- Provide Regular Updates to Board/Leadership: Present fundraising progress and financial reports to the board and executive team, highlighting successes and areas for improvement.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
- Build Relationships with Key Stakeholders: Cultivate relationships with community leaders, influencers, and partners to expand the nonprofit’s network and potential donor base.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- B.A. or Master’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration, public relations, and/or relevant field required with a minimum of 7-10 years of progressive fundraising and development experience in senior or executive leadership
- Nonprofit Graduate Certificate a plus
- Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) or other relevant fundraising certifications preferred, indicating a high level of professionalism and expertise in the field of fundraising.
- Proven track record of successfully securing major grant awards and gifts, managing high-net-worth donors, and working with diverse revenue streams (individual donors, corporate giving, foundations, government grants, etc.).
- Experience managing large-scale fundraising campaigns, including capital campaigns, annual giving, and planned giving programs
- Experience with strategic planning and goal setting for fundraising initiatives, setting and meeting fundraising targets and KPIs
- Strong knowledge of donor stewardship, including creating personalized strategies for donor engagement and retention
- Proven experience working with boards and executive leadership teams to support fundraising strategies and goals.
- Experience with donor management systems (CRM software, e.g., Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, etc.), and data analysis tools for fundraising tracking and reporting.

Salary : $160,000 - $180,000
