OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB:
To provide an effective program of instruction based on the needs and capabilities of the identified students using a variety of reading strategies; to assist students in successfully meeting classroom instructional goals; to provide leadership and support for classroom teachers pertaining to current language arts theory and instructional practices.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:
- Works cooperatively with classroom teachers to provide an effective language arts program that addresses a variety of student needs and capabilities in an in-class and/or pull-out program format.
- Serves as a resource person to building staff regarding current and effective language arts strategies.
- Develops a building-level parent involvement program to include parents in the education of their child.
- Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of all students.
- Provides testing and diagnostic analysis of a students’ current level of performance, needs, and strengths as requested.
- Is knowledgeable concerning current Title I laws and requirements and fulfills record keeping duties in a timely and accurate manner.
- Encourages students to set and maintain acceptable standards of classroom behavior.
- Develops and maintains a learning environment appropriate for the students, within the limits of available resources, and consistent with the findings of effective school research.
- Collaborates with the supervisor toward the setting of goals as appropriate for the improvement of instruction.
- Prepares written lesson plans consistent with district policy.
- Correlates individual instructional objectives with the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the district’s planned courses and/or PDE mandates.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when necessary and under reasonable terms.
OTHER DUTIES OF JOB:
- Provides building staff development programs as requested.
- Attends and participates in faculty, department, and district meetings as per negotiated contract.
- Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relations with others.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by Building Principal and/or Dir. of Elementary Curriculum.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Receives instruction and supervision from the Building Principal and/or Reading Supervisor in regard to work duties.
SUPERVISION GIVEN:
None
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Works indoors in adequate workspace, lighting, ventilation, and temperatures.
2. Works with average indoor exposure to noise and stress.
3. Works indoors with normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt.
4. Periodically exposed to irate faculty members and/or parents.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Must possess hearing, seeing, speaking, smelling, and reasoning senses necessary to carry out job duties.
- Must possess ability to record, convey, and present information; explain policies and procedures; and follow instructions.
- Must possess ability to sit, stand, and walk periodically throughout the workday with occasional carrying, reaching, and grasping as necessary to carry out job duties.
- Dexterity requirements range from coordinated movements of hands/fingers to operate a computer and calculator to simple movements of feet/legs and torso necessary to carry out job duties.
- Must be able to pay close attention to detail and concentrate on work.
- Sedentary work with occasional lifting and carrying of objects with weights of approximately ten pounds.

Pennsylvania Instructional I Certificate
Pennsylvania Reading Specialist Certificate
Master’s Degree or Equivalence

Classroom/Title I Teaching Experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential function of job.

- Must possess ability to understand and implement student performance standards and related assessment procedures.
- Must possess ability to demonstrate and understand individualized instructional processes.
