Title: Communications Strategist
Reports to: Development Director
Directly Supervises: None
Coordinates With: Executive Director, Development Operations Associate, Grant Grant Writer(s), Donor Engagement & Stewardship Officer, Volunteer & Corporate
Summary of Job:
This position supports the Development Department, which has a budgetary responsibility of ~$8M in private (individual, foundation and corporate giving), while supporting another $9M in government (primarily city) funding.
The Communications Strategist is responsible for developing and executing communications strategy, graphic design and brand management for the agency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
External Communications:
- Build and implement an 18-month annual communications strategy
- Design strategy for brand awareness and build brand equity
- Ensure consistency across all media (website, newsletters, graphic assets)
- Manage media requests and visits from coordination to completion
- Collaborate and coordinate with HPP staff and clients to document agency efforts, produce social media content and oversee ethical client storytelling.
Graphic & Communications Design:
- Intermediate to advanced competency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) to design digital and print media that supports HPP’s development efforts such as: annual reports, e-newsletters, event invitations, digital collateral, website
- Develop and produce messaging and imagery to convey client stories and agency goals for website, general communications, fundraising campaigns and other media
- Design, edit and update ongoing materials
- Develop and manage HPP’s archive of digital media including photos and videos
- Manage and update communication-related documents, files, and other materials up to date in shared drive and website
Social Media:
- Manage all social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Vimeo) to reflect HPP brand, mission and work
- Develop and create digital campaigns for appeals, events and ongoing messaging
- Work with staff to cull sharable, engaging content that enhances ethical storytelling
- Collaborate, interact and respond to community partners, companies, organizations and individual followers
- Implement digital marketing strategies and manage, track and produce sponsored post to maximize reach and engagement
- Analyze metrics related to engagement and, as possible, fundraising
- Stay up to date with changing platform features, editing and media tools
Event Support:
- Support the Development Team with ongoing and new agency events
- Plan, produce and design marketing and communications materials for agency events including print and digital
- Manage event registration site and event page on website
- Support event management including set-up, day-of event production and wrap up
Website Management:
- Oversee day-to-day maintenance and administration of HPP’s website
- Identify and use SEO tactics to promote website's presence and drive traffic
- Manage website administration including domain, hosting accounts and updates
- Respond to security issues, troubleshoot and resolve website performance issues

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (Communications/Marketing, Design highly desired) or 3 years of related experience
- Understanding of and commitment to social justice, HPP’s mission and organizational values
- Intermediate to advanced competency in Adobe Suite, WordPress and other design programs and media platforms
- Excellent communication skills
- Self-starter with the ability to manage competing priorities, demonstrated ability to multitask
- Collaborative approach to work and commitment to ethical fundraising practices
- Experience with Salesforce a plus
- Experience with print and mailing services/vendors and print specifications a plus
- Understanding of the intersection of racism and poverty and a commitment to social justice, anti-racism, and HPP’s mission and organizational values.

Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to work under stress and handle multiple project deadlines. This position requires an annual tuberculosis test and may require moderate lifting.

Founded in 1989, the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) is a nationally recognized family resource center in San Francisco that empowers homeless and low-income families, particularly mothers motivated by pregnancy and parenthood, to find within themselves the strength and confidence they need to transform their lives.
HPP helps families become healthy, stable and self-sufficient. We focus on the social determinants of health, supporting both parents and children in order to strengthen the whole family. With services ranging from emergency support to intensive case management, the agency partners with parents to address family needs during the critical years from pregnancy through kindergarten.
The first agency in San Francisco to hire former clients as staff, HPP’s evolution has been guided by the community it serves. More than half of HPP’s immensely talented staff of 125 come from the community and/or are graduates of the agency’s Community Health Worker Apprenticeship Program, which trains individuals for careers in the nonprofit sector.
