JOB SUMMARY
Mandatory Training Dates: Flexible.
Camp Dates: Spring: Monday - Friday. March 17 - March 28, 2025
Shifts: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm OR 9:30 am-6:00 pm (includes 30-minute lunch break)

The Honolulu Zoo Society's Education Department seeks experienced instructors to ensure campers have safe, fun, and meaningful experiences. The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to fostering an engaging and supportive learning environment for children.
Camps operate from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with optional aftercare available for pick-up at 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
During the mandatory training sessions, instructors will receive safety instructions for zoo conduct and curriculum.
Instructors will lead each camp under the supervision of the Executive Director and Education Coordinator.
HZS offers day camps during the summer, fall, winter, and spring and additional programs daily, weekly, and monthly throughout the year.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Serve the Honolulu Zoo’s mission "to inspire stewardship of our living world by providing conservation, education, and meaningful experiences to our community. The Zoo emphasizes Pacific Tropical ecosystems and our values of malama (caring) and ho`okipa (hospitality)."
- Lead educational lessons about the natural sciences and wildlife.
- Conduct Zoo tours, animal encounters, science projects, games, and other activities.
- Maintain a safe and encouraging environment for all participants, staff, and animals.
- Assist in all aspects of program preparation, such as setting up, maintaining, and inventorying program supplies.
- Mentor Junior (Teen) Volunteers and provide guidance when needed.
- Assist with aftercare for all age groups.
- Any other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- Experience working with children in camps, youth programs, recreation, or a related field.
- Experience leading or supervising groups of various sizes and ages, particularly children ages 5 to 12.
- Interest in wildlife and environmental conservation. Eagerness and ability to learn more.
- Ability to teach children about the animals and habitats at the Honolulu Zoo.
- Must be able to work collaboratively with others to deliver program content.
- Must be comfortable communicating with staff.
- Must be able to work in various weather conditions, including humidity, heat, and light rain.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Must be able to walk or move for extended periods to give tours throughout public areas in the Zoo and lead activities.
PREFERENCES
- Highly qualified candidates should have a degree in Education, Biology, Zoology, Environmental Studies, or affiliated science.
- Individuals in the process of obtaining a degree in one of the above-mentioned disciplines or having an equivalent combination of education and related work experience will also be considered.
- A teaching background in science education or animal sciences is preferred.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
REQUIREMENTS FOR EDUCATION STAFF
- Complete a state and federal background check.
- HZS requests all new hires to complete a pre-employment drug test.
