What are the responsibilities and job description for the Edger Operator position at Hood Lumber?
Responsibilities:
- Controls the flow of side boards and cuts lumber that falls on the infeed decks, which travels on lumber chains over the unscrambler, under the scanner, and into the edger machine.
- Manually adjusts board and/or wood placement on the decks and lumber chains.
- Unjams boards/wood as required.
- Makes minor adjustments and repairs to equipment as needed. Contacts Maintenance/Supervisor for issues the operator is unable or untrained to manage.
- Performs preventive maintenance, including changing saws in the saw box.
- Monitors the Edger Hog, if working on Edger 1, to make sure that scrap wood is feeding into Hog without jamming up. Unjams Hog when necessary.
- Observes the Edger Landing deck if working on Edger 2. Unjams wood on this deck as needed.
- Cleans up work area during the day and at end-of-shift, which includes using an overhead crane to strap up and move oversized boards/cants.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma/GED preferred.
- Ability to understand, clearly communicate, and follow all safety rules and policies.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Ability to make decisions quickly utilizing hand, eye, and foot coordination.
- Able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
Physical Requirements:
- Performs tasks such as walking, climbing steps/ladders, sitting, and standing for long periods.
- Able to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, or reach with body, arms, and/or legs.
- Ability to work outside in all conditions, in and around loud equipment.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. throughout the work shift.
