What are the responsibilities and job description for the Planer Set Up Operator position at Hood Lumber?
We are looking for a Planer Setup Operator who has experience with setting up Planer machines. Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor the flow of material to and from the machine center and make adjustments as necessary to ensure production quality and quantity standards are met.
- Conduct visual equipment inspections, perform basic preventive maintenance and assist maintenance and Planer Technician in troubleshooting/improving equipment.
- Install knives using wrenches and gauges. Turn controls to adjust table levels, pressure boards and feed rolls according to depth of cut and thickness of stock. Starts planer and positions lumber on conveyor/inserts lumber between feed rolls that carry lumber through planer.
- Repair, set-up, and adjust planer for required sizes
- Operation Monitoring: Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
- Maintain a safe and clean work area.
- Properly set up the planer to maximize lumber quality.
- Grease and oil the planer machine, doing light maintenance, maintaining equipment, effectively
- Examine logs for defects and report any issues to Quality Control.
- Performs tasks, such as, cleaning table, helping in other areas, etc.
- Cross-trained in other areas of the mill.
- Retain an awareness of the work environment critical to the task at hand to produce error free and damage free results.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED, and technical certifications.
- Must have at least 1-2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
- At least 1-2 years’ operating/setting up/maintaining a planer machine preferred.
- An aptitude for learning mechanical skills. Mechanical aptitude test required.
- Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Experience with inspecting lumber to ensure quality standards preferred.
- Ability to troubleshoot and analyze equipment to eliminate downtime.
- Experience with replacing, sharping/ joint knives.
- Demonstrate basic computer skills and experience using a computer for recordkeeping and documentation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Elevated work areas, Dirt/Saw Dust, Fast pace & Demanding, Loud/Noisy
- Work may consist of day or swing shift work, with some overtime, weekend and holiday work during busy production times operate equipment safely and responsibly.
- Collaborate with other team members to ensure efficient production.
- Able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
Physical Requirements:
- Performs tasks such as walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, grasping and standing for long periods.
- Able to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, or reach with body, arms, and/or legs.
- Ability to work outside in all conditions, in and around loud equipment. Must be able to lift to 50 lbs. throughout the work shift.
