Position Overview:
Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District (HRVPRD) is seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join our team as a Youth Sports Referee Mentor. This position is designed to provide guidance, support, and training to young and new referees working in our youth sports programs. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, a passion for sports, and the ability to foster a positive and supportive environment for referees to develop their skills.
As a Youth Sports Referee Mentor, you will work closely with our referees, offering coaching and feedback to help them improve their performance on the field while ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and respectful environment for youth athletes.
Key Responsibilities:
Mentorship & Training:
Provide one-on-one coaching, feedback, and support to new or developing youth sports referees.
Assist in the training of new referees by explaining rules, proper officiating mechanics, and conflict resolution techniques.
Observe referees during games and provide constructive feedback in real-time.
Game Day Support:
Assist in the management of referees during game days, ensuring they have the resources and support they need.
Ensure referees are enforcing rules consistently, fairly, and safely.
Act as a resource for referees to ask questions or seek clarification during events.
Referee Development:
Create an environment that encourages professional growth for referees.
Help foster teamwork and collaboration among referees.
Conduct regular debriefing sessions with referees to discuss their performance and areas for improvement.
Promote Positive Sportsmanship:
Encourage referees to model and promote sportsmanship among players, coaches, and spectators.
Support HRVPRD’s mission to create an inclusive, respectful, and fun atmosphere for all participants.
Qualifications:
Experience:
Previous experience as a referee or official in youth sports is preferred.
Strong understanding of the rules and regulations of various youth sports (soccer, basketball, baseball, etc.).
Skills:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to provide constructive feedback and mentor others.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple referees and games simultaneously.
Other Requirements:
Ability to work weekends, evenings, and some holidays during the sports season.
Must be at least 18 years old.
Certification in first aid and CPR is a plus but not required.
Must be able to pass a background check.
