Dubois Rural Electric Cooperative (Dubois REC) has been a trusted provider of reliable and efficient electrical services to the 6 counties it serves in southern Indiana since 1939. We are currently seeking a skilled and motivated GIS and Staking Technician to join our team.
The GIS and Staking Technician will play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing our electric distribution grid. The ideal candidate will be responsible for supporting the planning, design, and implementation of new and upgraded electric services, while utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and staking procedures to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and safety.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engage with cooperative members to understand their service needs and evaluate electrical distribution requirements.
- Plan, design, and determine locations of overhead and underground electric distribution lines.
- Stake jobs based on member input, supervisor recommendations, and RUS guidelines.
- Advise members regarding new electric service, service upgrades, and relocation of existing infrastructure.
- Maintain and submit required reports, work orders, and time sheets on a timely basis.
- Prepare staking sheets, sketches, cost estimates, and other required documents for new electrical services or service improvements.
- Manage and maintain the GIS mapping system using ESRI and NISC staking tools to ensure data accuracy.
- Provide necessary GIS data, drawings, and assistance required by employees to aid in the planning, design, analysis, installation, and maintenance of the electric distribution system.
- Occasionally operate drones to evaluate the cooperative's electrical distribution system.
- Assist with outage restoration during storms.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned by management.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have an equivalent of the following education and/or experience.
- High school or vocational school graduate or have completed the General Education Development (GED).
- An associate degree in the field of Engineering or a related field is desirable.
- Will be required to complete a Comprehensive Staking Technician Certification Program.
- Will be required to complete the Hoosier Energy Apprentice Training and Safety (HEATS) 4-year program.
- Within 2 years of employment – Successfully acquire a Remote Pilot license from the Federal Aviation Administration.
- Experience with NISC software is preferred.
- Experience working with an electrical cooperative is preferred.
- Experience with the design, construction, and maintenance of electrical distribution lines to meet NESC and RUS requirements is preferred.
- An understanding of Geographical Information systems (GIS) is a must.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- Prefer a general knowledge of electric utility engineering practices, operations, and construction.
- Prefer a general knowledge of standard utility specifications and the National Electric Safety Code.
- Must be organized and detail oriented.
- Excellent member service and communication skills.
- Must be proficient with most forms of technology.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Outdoor work required in a variety of weather conditions in addition to normal office working conditions.
- Occasional work outside of normal work hours will be required.
- Occasional exposure to varying temperature conditions, including cold below 32 degrees and heat above 100 degrees.
- Minimal exposure to fumes, odors, gases, chemicals, poor ventilation, dust and dirt.
- Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings.
- Daily service territory travel is required with occasional out-of-state travel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. and frequently carry items up to 20 lbs.
- Regularly required to stand for long periods, walk on uneven terrain, sit, use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid driver’s license is required
Must possess (or be able to obtain) a valid Indiana Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
