Dubois Rural Electric Cooperative (Dubois REC) has been a trusted provider of reliable and efficient electrical services to the 6 counties it serves in southern Indiana since 1939. We are currently seeking a skilled and motivated Meter Technician to join our team.
The Meter Technician will play a vital role in ensuring accurate and reliable metering for our members. The ideal candidate will be responsible for installing, maintaining, testing, and troubleshooting electric meters and related equipment. You will ensure all meters function properly, providing accurate billing and monitoring for our members. The role requires attention to detail, technical expertise, and a commitment to safety and efficiency.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Install and Replace Meters: Install new electric meters for members and replace outdated or malfunctioning meters. Ensure proper installation to meet operational standards and member needs.
- Routine Maintenance and Inspection: Conduct regular maintenance and inspections of electric meters to ensure they are functioning properly. Identify and resolve issues before they impact service.
- Testing and Calibration: Perform tests and calibrations on electric meters to ensure accurate readings for billing. Document test results and take corrective actions when discrepancies are found.
- Meter Reading: Conduct manual or automated meter readings in the field, ensuring that readings are accurately recorded for member billing purposes.
- Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot and diagnose issues related to faulty or malfunctioning meters. Perform repairs or escalate issues as needed to supervisors.
- Data Collection and Reporting: Accurately record and enter meter data into the cooperative’s software. Maintain detailed service records and generate reports as required by management
- Disconnects: Required to disconnect members meters during the monthly collections process, occasionally after hours.
- Customer Service: Interact with members in a professional and courteous manner during installations, repairs, or when addressing inquiries about their meters.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols while performing fieldwork, including the use of proper protective gear, and ensuring the safety of self, members, and coworkers.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned by management.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have an equivalent of the following education and/or experience.
- High school or vocational school graduate or have completed the General Education Development (GED).
- Will be required to complete the Hoosier Energy Apprentice Training and Safety (HEATS) 4-year program.
- Within 2 years of employment – Successfully acquire a Remote Pilot license from the Federal Aviation Administration.
- Experience with NISC software is preferred.
- Experience with Sensus Meters is preferred.
- Experience working with an electrical cooperative is preferred.
- Experience in meter reading, electrical work, or a related trade is advantageous.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- Prefer a general knowledge of electric metering equipment and an understanding of the basic electrical theory.
- Prefer a general knowledge of standard utility specifications and the National Electric Safety Code.
- Must be organized and detail oriented.
- Ability to work independently and in team settings.
- Excellent member service and communication skills.
- Must be proficient with most forms of technology.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Frequent outdoor work required in a variety of weather conditions in addition to normal office working conditions.
- Monthly on-call availability for meter-related issues outside of normal work hours will be required.
- Occasional exposure to varying temperature conditions, including cold below 32 degrees and heat above 100 degrees.
- Minimal exposure to fumes, odors, gases, chemicals, poor ventilation, dust and dirt.
- Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings.
- Daily service territory travel is required with occasional out-of-state travel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. and frequently carry items up to 20 lbs.
- Regularly required to stand for long periods, walk on uneven terrain, sit, use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
- Must be able to safely climb ladders, work at heights, and perform tasks in confined spaces.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid driver’s license is required
Must possess (or be able to obtain) a valid Indiana Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
