Position: Middle School Bilingual Social Studies Teacher for 6th-8th grade [Full-time exempt]
Schedule: 8:00am - 4:00pm (M-F) [2025-26 school year starts from 8/19/2025]
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Middle School Bilingual Social Studies Teacher who is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and English to join our team. Goals:
- Develop students into becoming responsible, bilingual, bi-literate and multi-culturally competent members of the community.
- Support school goals as determined by the Hope Chinese Charter School (“HCCS”) and its Board of Directors.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education, Social Studies, History, Political Science, or a related field from an accredited institution. A degree in English, Education, or a related field with strong Mandarin language skills is also acceptable.
- Certification: Must hold or be on the path to obtaining an Oregon TSPC-authorized teaching license with appropriate endorsements. Social Studies endorsement preferred.
- Language Proficiency: Close to or Native-level fluency in Mandarin Chinese (speaking, reading, and writing) and strong proficiency in English.
- Experience: Minimum one year of classroom teaching experience at upper elementary (grades 4-6) or higher preferred. Experience teaching social studies or related humanities subjects is highly desirable.
- Classroom Management: Strong ability to create a structured, student-centered learning environment that fosters critical thinking, discussion, and engagement with historical and contemporary issues.
- Curriculum & Instruction: Knowledge of state and national social studies standards, experience designing and delivering engaging lessons, and ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners.
- Technology Skills: Proficiency in integrating technology into instruction to enhance student learning.
- Communication & Collaboration: Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, and families in a bilingual environment.
- Cultural Competency: A strong commitment to fostering an inclusive, multicultural learning environment that supports students from diverse backgrounds.
Key Responsibilities:
Academic:
- Provide interactive, engaging, and meaningful bilingual (Mandarin/English) social studies lessons using the school's curriculum and instructional materials while fostering a positive learning environment.
- Design lessons that accommodate diverse learning styles and student backgrounds, incorporating differentiated strategies to support student success.
- Integrate Mandarin and English language learning within social studies instruction, supporting students in developing strong bilingual reading, writing, and discussion skills.
- Develop and administer assignments, quizzes, and exams. Analyze results to track student progress and adjust teaching strategies accordingly. Maintain accurate records of student performance.
- Provide supplementary learning materials, reference books, and digital resources to enhance student understanding. Leverage technology and online tools to support instructional programs.
Administrative:
- Work closely with special education teachers, the middle school team, and school leadership to create innovative learning strategies tailored to student needs. Participate in professional development activities.
- Establish and enforce clear classroom expectations and behavior management strategies in alignment with school policies. Promote a respectful and inclusive learning environment.
- Maintain open, proactive, and professional communication with students, parents, and colleagues. Provide regular updates on student progress and address any concerns with care and professionalism.
- Maintain instructional and student evaluation records in accordance with school policies and state regulations. Ensure all necessary reports, academic records, and student documentation are accurately completed and securely stored.
- Identify and provide additional academic and behavioral support for students with learning challenges, collaborating with families and support staff to implement effective interventions.
- Actively participate in staff meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and school events. Support extracurricular activities, including field trips, student clubs, and other school initiatives.
- Assist with supervisory duties such as monitoring students in hallways, the cafeteria, and school grounds as assigned.
Working Conditions:
- Works primarily indoors in a classroom setting, with occasional outdoor supervision duties in variable weather conditions, including inclement weather.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, and moving around the classroom for extended periods. May involve occasional bending, reaching, or light lifting of instructional materials. Assistance is available for heavier lifting.
- May be exposed to elevated noise levels in classrooms, hallways, or common areas and must be able to communicate effectively in loud environments.
- May encounter fluctuating indoor temperatures, dust, and exposure to common communicable illnesses typically found in school settings.
- Responsible for transporting classroom instructional materials, books, paperwork, and teaching aids. Assistance is available for heavier lifting.
