JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: RESIDENT ADVOCATE (RA)

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

Monitors safety and security of residents during scheduled shifts. Monitors residents to ensure

they are in their rooms at the designated times; Answer telephone and appropriately handle calls,

Including crisis calls; Intervene in emergencies; Keep accurate documentation and records;

Coordinate all scheduled activities during assigned shift and document as required by policy.

Empower and encourage clients on a positive path as they work on life goals.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completed high school or GED equivalency
  • Must have ability to be flexible and make appropriate judgments quickly.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be a strong role model for clients and represent HH in positive manner
  • Must have basic reading and writing skills
  • Must be available for night, weekend and holiday schedules and/or flexible as needed
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Must be able to meet physical requirements listed in job description below
  • Must be able to participate in assigned and available training relevant to performing job duties

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure safety and security during designated shift
  • Make sure all doors and windows are locked (make routine security rounds as noted in policy); Ensure alarm is turned on at designated times.
  • Does not give any information regarding clients to phone callers; adheres to and maintains confidentiality of client information.
  • Ensures that appropriate safety measures are followed in the shelter such as electrical cords, irons and curling irons, general safety, etc.
  • Supervision
  • Ensure residents are accounted for during shift and in their rooms at designated times, including scheduled residential meeting/education sessions
  • Checks all rooms at frequent intervals, documents head counts. Notify supervisor of any resident who is not in the building after curfew.
  • Monitor sign in/out sheets for residents, volunteers, vendors, guests, etc.
  • Supervise daily living in communal environment ensuring that safety is a priority
  • Prepares menus with feedback and assistance from Dietician, follows through with documentation per policy.
  • Ensure that residents complete daily chores, document participation or lack of.
  • Ensure that empowerment based services are appropriate for daily living
  • Maintains inventory of pantry and other areas of storage
  • Is alert to the environment at all times; follow through with submitting house needs list and requests, incident reports, etc.
  • Documents temperature logs and pest control logs, bed night sheets, daily meal documentation of who eats, completes request forms and follows protocol, and maintains filing system for reporting processes
  • Review Residential Handbook with new clients and completes an orientation with all new clients as they enter the program.
  • Maintains all other required documentation per policy.
  • Maintain the shelter office/command center
  • Answer the phone, take messages, complete crisis call sheets, be positive advocate for crisis calls, transfer calls to other staff members, etc.
  • Maintain positive public relations with all callers; courtesy, polite, professional
  • Ensure resident confidentiality by giving out no information that would breach confidentiality policies.
  • Maintains accurate files, records of events during the shift; ensure documentation is appropriate
  • Ensure mail is delivered to main office daily.
  • Intervene in Emergencies
  • Intervenes fights and misunderstandings among residents in a positive and proactive manner; Utilizes positive conflict resolution skills.
  • Documents incidents and accidents and report immediately to supervisor
  • Maintain calm and rational approach to emergencies and use protocols established to successfully handle emergencies
  • Call 911 in the event there is an emergency that cannot be handled internally (aggressive behaviors by others in the shelter or fire, etc.)
  • Coordinate scheduled activities
  • Greet scheduled guests and arrange for their needs to be met.
  • Ensure volunteers are operating within approved policies and that volunteers sign in and documents their hours and service to Hope House.
  • Ensure client attendance at mandatory functions
  • Facilitate house meetings as assigned
  • Facilitate peer support groups as assigned
  • Team Work

A. Work directly with clients to monitor progress toward goals

  • Give individual assistance in life skills, job search skills and other goal related skills to clients
  • Report to Case Manager or Program Manager on progress and concerns using established client logs
  • Work with entire staff to ensure consistent and quality assistance to the client as she works toward goals.
  • Motivate and encourage women and their children toward self-sufficiency; document as required
  • Maintain necessary education and certification
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service training meetings according to policy
  • Attend any relevant seminars and workshops if relevant to job duties.
  • Read all circulated materials such as memos and educational materials; sign off and file in memo binder or post as instructed.
  • All other assignments as directed by the Case Manager and/or Executive Director.
  • Works 100% in program.

PHYSICAL REQUIEMENTS

  • Moderate walking, standing, climbing stairs, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling of weight, and light lifting and carrying, sitting at desk or other sitting areas.
  • Moderate use of hands to include grasping, both firm and light.
  • General house cleaning activities from time to time.
  • In event of a crisis or emergency be able to demonstrate crisis intervention skills
