Horizon High School, Wisconsin’s only recovery high school, is seeking a dedicated and qualified educator to teach Social Studies, Language Arts, and Math. Horizon is a small, private, non-profit institution committed to providing an educational environment for adolescents in recovery from substance abuse and mental health challenges. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about project-based learning, maintains high academic expectations, and understands the unique needs of students in recovery.
Position Overview:
This role offers an opportunity to join a collaborative team of educators focused on fostering a supportive and challenging academic environment. The ideal candidate will have experience working in alternative education settings and possess a solid understanding of trauma-informed, inclusive educational practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support and embody the school’s mission, values, goals, and policies in interactions with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues.
- Design and deliver developmentally appropriate instruction in Social Studies, Language Arts, and Math, tailored to the unique needs of individual students.
- Establish a classroom culture that upholds high expectations for student behavior, academic growth, and engagement.
- Collaborate with staff to analyze student data and refine instructional practices to improve student outcomes.
- Share best practices and work collaboratively with colleagues to continuously improve teaching strategies and assessments.
- Maintain regular communication with parents/guardians through phone calls, home visits, and conferences to discuss student progress.
- Demonstrate respectful and supportive interactions with students, maintaining a positive and safe learning environment.
- Fulfill additional responsibilities related to contracting with the Madison Metropolitan School District and other nearby districts, ensuring that district expectations are met.
Education & Experience:
- A minimum of five years of experience in an educational setting is preferred, especially in an alternative school environment.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed teaching practices and inclusive education is highly desirable.
- Strong academic background and teaching capacity, with an ability to foster a positive learning environment for students in recovery.
- Alignment with the values of Horizon High School, including a commitment to high standards and the holistic development of students.
