Job Summary: The Apprentice Plumber is an entry-level position designed to provide hands-on training in the plumbing trade. Under the guidance and supervision of experienced plumbers, apprentices learn the skills required to install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems in residential, commercial, and industrial environments.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
Help journeyman plumbers with the installation of pipes, fixtures, valves, and other plumbing components in new construction or renovation projects
Install basic plumbing systems such as water supply lines, drainage, and vent systems under supervision
Assist in the repair and maintenance of plumbing systems, including fixing leaks, replacing faucets, toilets, and water heaters, and clearing clogged drains
Study and interpret blueprints, schematics, and plumbing diagrams to understand system layouts and installation requirements
Assist in marking locations for plumbing components based on project specifications
Learn to cut, thread, and install various types of pipes (copper, PVC, galvanized steel, etc.) to complete plumbing systems
Help with pipe fittings and the joining of pipes to ensure water-tight seals
Assist in testing plumbing systems to identify issues, leaks, or pressure inconsistencies
Help journeymen plumbers inspect installations to ensure proper operation and adherence to codes
Use basic plumbing tools (pipe wrenches, pliers, drills, saws, etc.) to assist in tasks under supervision
Learn to safely handle and maintain specialized plumbing tools and equipment
Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and clean work areas regularly to ensure a safe and efficient environment
Adhere to safety protocols and best practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), to ensure personal and team safety
Help maintain a safe and organized worksite, adhering to OSHA standards and plumbing code regulations
Provide general labor support on plumbing job sites, including moving materials, cleaning work areas, and preparing work sites for new plumbing installations
Communicate effectively with team members and clients to ensure efficient project progress
Continuously develop plumbing knowledge by observing experienced plumbers and applying new skills learned
Actively participate in hands-on training, learning to troubleshoot and solve common plumbing issues under the guidance of a journeyman or master plumber
Develop good interpersonal skills while assisting clients and ensuring their needs are met
Keep accurate records of work completed and report issues or concerns to supervisors
Learn plumbing techniques and best practices through mentorship from experienced plumbers

Experience
Experience or familiarity with basic hand tools (wrenches, pipe cutters, drills, etc.)
Exposure to tools through school projects, home repairs, or prior work experience can demonstrate basic competence
Prior experience in construction, labor, or general manual work
Experience in customer service or as part of a team
Experience or familiarity with manual labor, heavy lifting, or working in physically demanding environments
Required Skills/Abilities
A foundational understanding of plumbing systems, including water supply, drainage, and venting systems
Familiarity with the types of materials and pipes commonly used in plumbing (e.g., PVC, copper, steel)
Ability to safely handle and use basic plumbing tools, such as pipe wrenches, drills, pipe cutters, pliers, and augers
Ability to understand and interpret simple plumbing diagrams, blueprints, or technical drawings
Strong commitment to safety, including following OSHA guidelines and using personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary
Ability to recognize safety risks in the workplace and notify supervisors of unsafe conditions
Good hand-eye coordination and the ability to perform tasks requiring fine motor skills, such as using hand tools or handling small components
Ability to lift heavy materials, tools, and equipment (e.g., pipe sections, fittings, water heaters) and work in physically demanding environments
Comfortable working in confined spaces, at heights, or in varying weather conditions
Basic problem-solving skills, allowing apprentices to assist with identifying plumbing issues such as leaks, clogs, or poor water pressure
Ability to assist in determining effective solutions under the supervision of journeymen plumbers
The ability to notice small details, which is important for identifying problems in plumbing systems and ensuring work is done accurately and up to code
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, clients, and coworkers. This includes asking for clarification when unsure about tasks, and reporting issues or progress on work assignments
Ability to work well with others on job sites, including plumbers, contractors, and other workers
A willingness to learn plumbing techniques, code requirements, and safety procedures
Ability to adapt to different work environments, tasks, and varying types of plumbing projects, from residential to commercial or industrial systems
Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively, assisting with plumbing installations and repairs in an organized manner to avoid delays
Ability to assist in maintaining accurate records of work completed, materials used, and any issues encountered during plumbing projects
Basic math skills, including the ability to measure pipe lengths, calculate material requirements, and estimate distances when installing or repairing plumbing systems
Physical, Mental Demands/Working Environment
Physical Demands
Light to Medium Work. Exerting up to 11 - 50 pounds occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects
Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
Capable of driving a vehicle
Working Environment
Work primarily in a commercial environment and outdoors for field repairs
May be exposed to noise, fumes, and varying temperatures
Overtime and weekend work may be required based on business needs
