Job Summary:
The journeyman plumber in a contracting company is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing systems and fixtures in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. The role involves interpreting blueprints, troubleshooting plumbing issues, and ensuring all work complies with local, state, and federal codes. The journeyman plumber works both independently and as part of a team, often collaborating with other trades and contractors to complete projects on time and to the highest quality standards.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
Install plumbing systems, including pipes, fixtures, fittings, water heaters, and drainage systems in residential, commercial, or industrial buildings
Repair or replace damaged or malfunctioning plumbing components, such as faucets, valves, and toilets
Maintain plumbing systems to ensure proper operation and prevent potential issues
Diagnose and resolve plumbing issues, such as leaks, clogs, low water pressure, or faulty equipment
Use specialized tools to identify and repair complex plumbing problems efficiently
Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to determine plumbing layouts and specifications
Plan and execute plumbing work based on project designs and requirements
Ensure all plumbing installations and repairs meet local, state, and federal building codes and standards
Follow safety protocols to minimize hazards and risks on the job site
Participate in regular safety training and adhere to OSHA guidelines
Inspect plumbing systems to verify functionality and compliance with regulations
Perform pressure tests and leak detection to ensure the integrity of installed systems
Document inspection results and any necessary repairs
Work alongside other trades, such as electricians, HVAC technicians, and general contractors, to complete projects efficiently
Communicate with project managers and supervisors to provide updates on job progress
Coordinate tasks with team members to meet project deadlines
Interact with clients to understand their plumbing needs and concerns
Operate and maintain plumbing tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition
Keep track of materials and supplies, reporting shortages to supervisors
Train and mentor plumbing apprentices, teaching them proper techniques, safety procedures, and best practices
Respond to emergency plumbing calls, such as burst pipes or sewage backups, and provide immediate solutions
Maintain license in good standing

Education/Certifications/Licenses
Education
High School Diploma or GED required
Trade School or Vocation Training is a plus
Certifications
OSHA 10/OSHA 30 or ability to obtain
Licenses
Journeyman License or within window to take exam
Driver’s License required
Experience
4-5 years of Apprenticeship Training
Hands on experience as an apprentice, individuals must perform plumbing tasks such as installing pipes, fixtures, and appliances, learning how to read blueprints, and troubleshooting issues, all under the guidance of a journeyman or master plumber
Experience working in both residential and commercial settings
Exposure to specialized plumbing systems such as gas fitting
Knowledge of OSHA and other safety protocols is also crucial for ensuring the safety of both workers and clients
Experience in explaining the scope of work, providing estimates, or addressing customer concerns
Familiarity with tools, equipment, and diagnostic methods to troubleshoot effectively and implement solutions
Required Skills/Abilities
Ability to install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems, including pipes, fixtures, water heaters, and drainage systems
Expertise in both residential and commercial plumbing, including basic tasks such as pipe fittings and more complex systems like gas and medical plumbing
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to determine layout and plan installations or repairs
Strong diagnostic skills to identify issues with plumbing systems such as leaks, clogs, faulty valves, and other malfunctions
Experience in troubleshooting and solving complex plumbing problems using specialized tools and techniques
In-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal plumbing codes and regulations to ensure all work is up to code
Familiarity with OSHA standards and safety regulations related to plumbing work, ensuring safe job site practices at all times
Proficiency in using plumbing tools and equipment, including pipe cutters, wrenches, pliers, augers, power tools, and welding equipment
Ability to maintain and care for tools and equipment to ensure their proper functioning
Familiarity with specialized plumbing equipment such as video inspection systems, pressure testing devices, and leak detection tools
Ability to think critically and make quick, effective decisions when faced with plumbing issues or emergencies
Ability to handle tools and work with small components requiring fine motor skills and precision
Physical ability to lift heavy equipment, carry tools, and work in confined spaces or at heights, often for extended periods of time
Strong verbal communication skills to explain technical issues and procedures clearly to customers, supervisors, or team members
Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines on plumbing projects
Ability to guide and mentor apprentices or less experienced plumbers, teaching them plumbing skills, safety practices, and company policies
