Job Summary:
The Carpenter Foreman leads a team of carpenters in the construction, installation, and repair of wood structures and frameworks on various contracting projects. This role involves overseeing day-to-day carpentry activities, ensuring adherence to project plans and specifications, and maintaining high standards of craftsmanship and safety. The Carpenter Foreman is responsible for coordinating work schedules, managing materials and tools, and ensuring that tasks are completed on time and within budget. This position requires strong leadership, technical carpentry skills, and the ability to interpret blueprints and construction drawings accurately. The ideal candidate has experience in supervising carpentry projects and a solid understanding of safety regulations and quality standards.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Assign daily tasks to carpenters based on project needs, skill levels, and timelines
Develop work schedules and ensure adequate coverage to meet project milestones and deadlines
Track team performance, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and on schedule
Provide guidance on carpentry techniques, tool usage, and best practices
Conduct regular safety training sessions to ensure team members are aware of safety protocols and compliance requirements
Mentor team members to help them improve their skills, providing constructive feedback to support their professional growth
Review completed work to ensure it meets project specifications, company quality standards, and client expectations
Uphold construction standards and best practices, correcting any deviations promptly
Address any issues or deficiencies in workmanship, making adjustments as needed to maintain high-quality results
Enforce OSHA and company-specific safety standards to minimize workplace hazards
Perform regular inspections to identify and address any potential safety issues
Respond to safety incidents promptly, report them to management, and implement corrective actions
Communicate progress, challenges, and resource needs with project managers to keep projects on track
Collaborate with other foremen and trades on-site to ensure seamless project execution
Document daily work progress, team attendance, and any incidents or issues that arise
Duties/ Responsibilities:
Oversee the day-to-day activities of the carpentry team, providing guidance, training, and task assignments
Track the team’s progress, productivity, and quality of work, addressing any issues promptly
Accurately read and interpret blueprints, construction plans, and technical drawings to guide the team’s work and ensure compliance with project specifications
Regularly inspect work to ensure that it meets quality standards and resolve any deficiencies in craftsmanship or adherence to specifications
Oversee and execute tasks related to framing, finishing, and installing structures, including doors, windows, partitions, and custom woodwork
Ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety regulations, maintaining a safe and organized worksite
Perform routine safety inspections, identify potential hazards, and address safety issues immediately
Ensure that all carpentry tools and equipment are in good working condition, arranging repairs or replacements as needed
Monitor and manage the use of materials to minimize waste and ensure that necessary supplies are available for each phase of the project
Keep accurate records of tools, equipment, and materials, and coordinate with the warehouse or procurement teams for timely replenishment
Work closely with project managers, other foremen, and trades to ensure smooth and timely project progression
Address any issues that arise during construction, such as unforeseen obstacles or discrepancies in plans, to keep the project on track
Document daily activities, project progress, and any incidents, ensuring accurate and complete records
Monitor and record team attendance, work hours, and overtime, submitting accurate timesheets to payroll and project management
Document and report any accidents or safety incidents according to company protocol, following up with corrective measures
Encourage team members to expand their skill sets, providing feedback and support for their professional development
Education/Certifications/Licenses
Education
High School Diploma or GED
Vocational Training or Apprenticeship is a plus
Certifications
OSHA 10/OSHA 30 or ability to obtain
First Aid/CPR Certification is a plus
Licenses
Contractor’s License
Trade-Specific License is a plus
Experience
5-10 years of practical experience in carpentry. This experience should cover a range of carpentry tasks, including framing, finishing, cabinetry, and installation of structures, depending on the company's focus
Foremen are expected to have advanced knowledge and skills in carpentry, including the ability to work with different materials (wood, metal, drywall) and tools
2-3 years of supervisory experience, such as working as a lead carpenter, assistant foreman, or crew leader
Experience managing a crew, resolving conflicts, training junior carpenters, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols is often essential
Experience with checking completed work to ensure quality standards and code compliance is valuable
Familiarity with OSHA standards and general job site safety is usually required, as foremen are responsible for the safety of their team
Required Skills/Abilities
Mastery of rough and finish carpentry, framing, cabinetry, drywall installation, and other core carpentry skills
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical documents accurately
Strong skills in measuring, calculating dimensions, estimating materials, and other math skills that are essential in construction
Ability to lead, train, and mentor a crew of carpenters and laborers, providing guidance and ensuring high-quality work
Skilled in delegating tasks effectively while managing workloads and ensuring deadlines are met
Capable of addressing conflicts within the team or with other trades in a professional manner
Ability to create and follow project schedules, manage time effectively, and adjust workflows as needed to stay on track
Skilled in ordering, organizing, and tracking materials and tools to avoid delays and minimize waste
Detail-oriented and capable of inspecting completed work to ensure it meets the required quality and safety standards
Understanding of OSHA standards and ability to enforce safety regulations on-site
Ability to identify potential hazards, mitigate risks, and ensure a safe working environment for all crew members
Skilled in using various carpentry tools (e.g., saws, drills, levels) and machinery, as well as performing basic maintenance on them
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve unexpected issues that arise during construction, from structural challenges to resource limitations
Ability to convey instructions clearly to crew members and discuss progress or issues with project managers and clients
Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with other trades, contractors, and project stakeholders
Skilled in documenting daily activities, progress reports, and any incidents, which are often needed for project records
Ability to notice and address small details that could impact the quality and safety of the work
Experience with construction project management software like Procore or Buildertrend can be a plus for managing schedules and reports
Skills in using email, spreadsheets, and other basic computer functions to communicate and track project details
