Job Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating various types of heavy machinery to support construction, excavation, and site preparation activities. This role involves handling equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, and compactors to complete earthmoving, grading, trenching, or related tasks according to project specifications. The operator must ensure adherence to safety protocols, maintain equipment, and collaborate with the site crew to meet project timelines and quality standards.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
Operate heavy machinery such as bulldozers, excavators, loaders, graders, and compactors to perform tasks including:
Excavation
Grading
Trenching
Backfilling
Compaction
Material loading and transportation
Ensure equipment is used efficiently and in accordance with project specifications
Prepare the site for construction activities by removing debris, leveling terrain, and digging trenches or foundations
Follow site plans, blueprints, or grade stakes to execute precise tasks
Work closely with surveyors and foremen to ensure proper elevations, alignments, and site layouts
Perform routine pre- and post-operation inspections of equipment to ensure it is in proper working condition
Report any mechanical issues, damage, or malfunctions to the maintenance team or supervisor
Assist in minor repairs or adjustments as needed, such as refueling or lubricating parts
Adhere to all safety protocols and OSHA regulations to maintain a safe work environment
Operate equipment responsibly to prevent accidents or damage to the site, equipment, or personnel
Follow verbal and written instructions to complete assigned tasks
Communicate progress, delays, or challenges to supervisors in a timely manner
Load and transport materials such as soil, gravel, sand, or debris to and from designated areas
Ensure proper handling of materials to minimize waste and maintain quality
Identify and address challenges such as unstable soil, weather disruptions, or equipment limitations
Adapt to changing project requirements or instructions while maintaining efficiency
Maintain accurate logs of equipment usage, hours worked, and material quantities as required
Report any incidents or near-misses in line with company procedures
Minimize environmental impact by following proper procedures for soil displacement, drainage, and debris disposal
Operate equipment in a manner that reduces noise, dust, and emissions when possible

Heavy Equipment Operator Certifications or ability to obtain
OSHA 10/OSHA 30 or ability to obtain
Licenses
Driver’s License
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus

Experience
2-5 years of hands-on experience operating heavy machinery such as:
Bulldozers
Excavators
Loaders
Graders
Compactors
Familiarity with operating multiple types of equipment is often preferred, especially for projects requiring versatility
Experience working on construction sites, road building, land clearing, trenching, or similar projects
Demonstrated ability to follow OSHA regulations and workplace safety practices
Proven track record of working in environments where safety is a priority, such as industrial or large-scale construction sites
Experience interpreting blueprints, site plans, and grade stakes for accurate execution of tasks
Familiarity with using GPS or laser-guided systems for grading and alignment
Hands-on experience performing basic maintenance tasks such as:
Inspecting equipment before and after use
Refueling and lubricating parts
Reporting or troubleshooting minor mechanical issues
Experience working collaboratively with foremen, project managers, and other crew members to meet deadlines and quality standards
Proven experience working in various terrains, weather conditions, and challenging site environments
Experience in specialized projects such as utility installation, foundation work, or site preparation for large structures
Familiarity with digital tools or construction management software

Skilled in operating a variety of heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, excavators, graders, loaders, and compactors
Ability to perform tasks like excavation, grading, trenching, material loading, and backfilling with precision
Understanding how each piece of equipment works and how to operate them efficiently for different tasks

Ability to identify and troubleshoot basic mechanical issues with equipment, such as fluid leaks, engine problems, or equipment malfunctions
Capable of adjusting to changing site conditions, such as weather, terrain, or project requirements, to maintain productivity and safety
Ability to clearly communicate with foremen, supervisors, and crew members, both verbally and in writing
Able to follow verbal instructions and provide updates on progress, delays, or issues
Works well as part of a team, coordinating tasks and activities with other equipment operators, laborers, and project managers
Ability to work long hours, often outdoors, in varying weather conditions, and in physically demanding environments
Coordination and fine motor skills required for precise operation of heavy machinery controls
Capacity to remain focused and operate machinery for extended periods
Understanding and interpreting construction drawings, site plans, and grade stakes to ensure tasks are completed as per specifications
Ability to perform basic calculations related to elevations, dimensions, and measurements to ensure accurate work execution
Knowledge of GPS systems or laser-guided equipment to achieve precise grading and excavation
Proficient in performing basic maintenance tasks, such as checking fluid levels, cleaning parts, and ensuring equipment is in good working condition
Awareness of the importance of routine checks and maintenance to avoid equipment breakdowns and delays
Ability to manage time effectively, ensuring work is completed within deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards
Ability to prioritize tasks based on project needs, safety concerns, and equipment availability
Operates equipment in ways that reduce environmental impact, such as controlling dust and minimizing soil disruption
Understanding of local laws and regulations related to environmental protection and land use
Focused on ensuring all tasks are completed accurately and according to specification
Consistently reliable, ensuring equipment is ready and operational for tasks and work schedules are met
Demonstrates a strong work ethic, punctuality, and a professional attitude while on-site
