The Director of Inpatient Care is responsible for management of our Inpatient Care facility at The Hospice of East Texas. This position ensures the facility, and all services provided are compliant with all applicable federal, state & local and accrediting body health and safety codes (including Life Safety Code); laws and regulations; and all applicable HOET policies and procedures. May also act as supervising or alternate supervising nurse.

Job Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing; BSN preferred
  • Current Texas RN: fulfill continuing education requirements associated with RN licensure
  • Current CPR Certification as required by policy
  • Documentation of at least five years nursing experience
  • Documentation of at least two years management experience in a health care setting preferred
  • Hospice experience preferred
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws for delivery of hospice services
  • Valid Texas Drivers License
  • Proof of current Automobile Liability Insurance
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend English
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software relevant to position; ability to master software applications relevant to position (including but not limited to payroll and electronic medical record)
  • Demonstrate ability to relate effectively with Board of Directors, physicians, health care professionals, the community, patients/families, and members of the hospice interdisciplinary team
  • Employee must be FIT tested for an N95 mask

Supervising Nurse Qualifications:

  • Be a registered nurse (RN) licensed in the Texas or in accordance with the Texas Board of Nursing rules for Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC); and
  • Have at least one-year experience as an RN within the last 36 months

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently required to stand, sit, walk, reach with hand and arms, stoop, kneel, twist, and crouch.
  • Regularly required to use hands to handle and feel; and to speak and hear.
  • Intermittently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to deal effectively with stress
  • Occasionally required to do standing/sitting presentations involving speaking and listening to an audience.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to focus.
  • Required ability to travel by automobile and airplane.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Active participant of the Hospice Leadership Team
  • Assume 24-hour responsibility for the quality of inpatient care
  • Available to Inpatient Care staff at all times in person or via telecommunication; or have designee available in person or via telecommunications
  • Provide oversight for the development/evaluation and refinement of patients' plan(s) of care
  • Attend weekly IDT meeting and ensure review of inpatient care plans
  • Ensure Medical Director or designee is informed of patients' condition(s) as appropriate
  • Ensure a patient's plan of care is executed as written
  • Develop, implement, and maintain patient care standards with staff involvement
  • Ensure reassessment of a patient's needs are performed by the appropriate health care professional when there is a significant health status change in the patient's condition
  • Administer all human and fiscal resources to provide quality, cost-effective patient care
  • Participates in budget process and demonstrates fiscal accountability
  • Assist staff in providing nursing care as needed
  • Participate in staff report during change of shifts when appropriate
  • Responsible for reporting inpatient activity
  • Assess inpatient operational need of equipment and supplies
  • Ensure coordination of staffing for all shifts to assure continuity of care. Available to facilitate staffing for uncovered shift
  • Participate in activities relevant to professional services furnished including staff development; and assignment of facility personnel according to job description, education and ability to perform tasks
  • Assess educational needs of staff, and ensures a minimum 12 hours of annual continuing education is offered to CNAs
  • Assist with and facilitate initial and annual competency testing of staff
  • Participates in the QA/Pl process and serves as a member of the QA/Pl committee
  • Monitor staff and patient safety
  • Responsible for: interviewing, selection, and coordination of orientation of new staff; and completion of staff annual performance evaluations.
  • Assumes responsibility for coaching and termination of staff
  • Ensures staff compliance with dress code and HOET personnel policies and procedures
  • Verify accuracy of time sheets; approve overtime when necessary
  • Coordinates nursing students learning experiences in the inpatient setting
  • Maintain current level of skills and evidence of competency
  • Adheres to all Confidentiality policies and procedures and maintains confidentiality of administrative information
  • Perform other reasonable duties as assigned
