Clinical Director of Community Grief Center

Hospice SLO County is hiring a full-time exempt Clinical Director to oversee the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of our clinical Grief Counseling Program, which consists of individual and family grief therapy and counseling for bereaved individuals. The Clinical Director position provides training, leadership, and mentorship to a team of licensed therapists, licensed clinical supervisors, graduate and postgraduate school trainees and associate therapists, and volunteer-trained paraprofessionals.

A valid California license as an LMFT, LCSW, or Licensed Clinical Psychologist and the ability to provide clinical supervision according to BBS regulations is required.

Hospice SLO County is a non-medical volunteer service organization and community grief center. We support San Luis Obispo County residents who are grieving a death, coping with a life-limiting illness, or facing end of life by providing in-home support, caregiver respite, grief counseling, support groups, community response, and education. All services are provided at no charge, and we do not bill insurance.

Essential Job Functions

  • Supervises a team of professionals and paraprofessionals providing individual and family grief therapy and counseling and facilitating psychotherapy group sessions for bereaved individuals.
  • Ensures the program operates in compliance with the laws and regulations of federal, state, and local agencies, the standards, rules, and regulations of the various agencies.
  • Provides individual and group clinical supervision and training in professional skills.
  • Ensures the Counseling Program has adequate staffing to meet the needs of the clients, community, and agency by overseeing the recruitment and interview process for the program.
  • Conducts outreach and recruitment presentations to relevant groups to recruit and identify new prospective therapists (trainees and associates).
  • Provides orientation and training for new Counseling Program personnel.
  • Performs client intakes primarily telephonically, but on occasion in person, and completes all needed communications to other counseling staff, ensuring that referrals are made to other community resources when appropriate.
  • Reviews appropriateness of client intakes and ensures appropriate assignment of clients.
  • Pursues strategies to maximize the availability of therapists and counselors and minimize waitlist.
  • Acts as the agency’s official liaison with outside constituents relevant to Clinical Services including serving as the primary point of contact with the Universities and contacting the Board of Behavioral Services (BBS) regarding pertinent ethical / legal matters.
  • Maintains current knowledge of regulatory requirements and communicates with staff to ensure their understanding of these requirements.
  • Together with the Clinical Supervisors, monitors supervises’ compliance with all ethical and legal therapy standards including the reporting of suspected child abuse, dependent adult abuse, and elder abuse as per state law.
  • Oversee the management of the counseling program electronic health record (EHR).
  • Responsible for accurate, complete, and timely program activities and data for grant reporting and provides monthly reports to the Executive Director to present to the Board of Directors.
  • As needed, facilitates or co-facilitates psychotherapy or support groups.
  • As needed, participates in responses to community organizations in the event of a sudden death.
  • As needed, provides individual and family therapy, both in person and through telehealth, to a diverse client population experiencing bereavement and anticipatory grief.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supervising professional staff.
  • A working knowledge of grief counseling and group process.
  • In-depth knowledge of grief and bereavement issues.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit setting.

    This is a full-time exempt position. The annual salary is $85,000.
