General Description:

The House Director is the official hostess of the chapter house and must possess superb managerial and communications skills. She must be comfortable working closely with collegiate women, alumnae volunteers, staff, and vendors/contractors. The House Director must also understand the need for discretion and maintaining confidentiality. She must be accessible and approachable. Attention to detail and careful record-keeping are also important attributes. In addition to the specific duties detailed below, the House Director shall perform such other job duties as assigned from time to time.

The role played by house directors ranges from manager to hostess, to friend and confidant. She significantly impacts a chapter’s living environment and can also contribute to the personal development of our members. For this reason, she must assume her responsibilities with an understanding of the attitudes and trends currently influencing campus life and she must always portray herself as a positive role model.

START DATE: June 1, 2025

STATUS: Full-time, hourly

Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in business, human resources, hospitality or related field; minimum 25 years of age; and possess a valid driver’s license. Must be physically active and able to perform normal physical functions, including lifting, bending and stretching.

Preferred: Previous experience as a sorority house director and/or working with college students.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Facilitate adherence to all rules and regulations as they apply to housing:

  • Become familiar with and comply with all pertinent rules, regulations, policies, by-laws and constitutional requirements of the local corporation, Sigma Kappa National Housing Corporation, the chapter, Sigma Kappa Sorority, and Purdue University.
  • Cooperate with the Corporation Board (CB) and the chapter in ensuring the enforcement of those rules. The role of the house director is to report violations to the chapter president or CB President, as required. The chapter must hold members accountable.

Be present and available to the chapter and its members:

  • Be responsive and sensitive to the cultural and ethnic differences among staff and chapter members.
  • Provide a supportive environment conducive to chapter members’ social, educational and emotional development.
  • Be present in the chapter house every night when chapter members are present, unless excused or on approved leave. During breaks in the academic year when chapter members are not present, it is acceptable for the House Director to work remotely.
  • If personal business requires that the house director be away all night, arrangements for a substitute must be approved in advance by the CB President or her designee.
  • Refrain from making personal engagements that necessitate being away from the chapter house on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday evenings unless permission has been granted by the CB President or her designee.
  • Arrange reasonable off-duty times to ensure personal privacy and let chapter members know which times are reserved as private time.
  • Inform the CB President or her designee and the chapter president of scheduling plans.
  • Be available to assist a member with an illness or personal problem if requested by that member. The house director should not involve herself in the personal affairs of a member, but she may be available to act as a wise, mature friend. If warranted, she should encourage the member to seek medical aid or professional help. Manage the day-to-day activities:
  • Manage the application, hiring process, and termination procedure for all house employees. Consult with the CB regarding all employee termination of employment decisions and have a witness when decisions are communicated to employees.
  • Supervise, manage, and direct house employees in their day-to-day activities.
  • Review household food and supply inventory and order each.
  • Plan weekly meals for Chapter members.
  • Maintain accurate records of dining room and household expenditures, endeavor to stay within the budget, and turn over all bills for payment to the appropriate parties.
  • Open and close the house before and after each vacation period at the hours defined in the Housing Agreement. Act as an official hostess:
  • Serve as hostess at scheduled meals, teas, and other social events held at the chapter house unless excused or represented by a substitute approved in advance by the CB President or her designee.
  • Be present throughout recruitment to assist with food preparation, meeting new members, hosting recruitment counselors, or other activities as needed.
  • Be gracious and well-groomed in the chapter house at all times, maintaining a proper air of dignity.
  • Set an example to members in the development and reinforcement of social courtesies.
  • Meet the chapter’s guests and ensure their comfort.
  • Learn the names of residents and frequent visitors.
  • Meet as many local alumnae members as possible.
  • Meet with visiting national officers and leadership consultants, if requested, to present her view of the conditions of the chapter house and chapter. Coordinate with the chapter to ensure support of chapter operations and activities:
  • Maintain a comprehensive calendar of chapter activities that impact house operations and house director duties.
  • Meet with the CB for reports and recommendations.
  • Attend all-house meetings as required to address housing issues and offer suggestions for the improvement of house conditions and operations. The house director does not participate in regular chapter meetings unless invited by the chapter president to do so.
  • Assist the CB in completing the Annual Inventory, which is submitted to the NHC by August 1st of each year.
  • Maintain confidentiality with respect to any and all chapter and personal affairs, remaining loyal to the chapter and individual members and at all times.
  • Report any damages, fire or accident to the CB, and periodically recommend any maintenance needs to the CB.
  • Contact tradesmen to repair and maintain the House, as necessary. In the event the expense for a particular job is estimated at more than $500, house director must obtain approval from the CB President or her designee.
  • Inform the CB President and CB of any inspection of the house by insurance adjusters, fire department, government agencies, University officials or others concerned with the maintenance, safety and security of the house, and forward copies of any related correspondence or written reports of same to the CB President and CB.
  • Conduct fire drills each semester or quarter, as necessary, in collaboration with the collegiate house manager, and participate in semester or quarter-end damage inspections at the request of the CB.
  • She shall be available to assist with any emergencies in the house following the Sigma Kappa Emergency Procedures.
  • During initiation and the initiation banquet following, the House Director must be away from the house unless allowed to remain by specific written permission from the CB.
  • Supervise cleaning and minor repairs and any workers employed for such purposes. Foster relations with University officials as well as other House Directors:
  • Be familiar with the University and chapter literature for house directors.
  • Attend meetings of campus house directors if such an organization exists.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

  • Salary commensurate with experience starting from $55,000 annually, or $26.46 per hour.
  • Paid vacation hours
  • Cell Phone allowance of $30 per month
  • Meals are provided at the chapter house during the academic school year; reimbursement for meals outside of the academic school year is available.
  • The House Director’s suite includes living space, a bathroom, and a bedroom. The House Director may live in the apartment all year round.
  • Designated parking space.
