Youth Development Specialist
The Youth Development Specialist focuses on designing and implementing opportunities for youth to learn and practice new skills within a therapeutic 24 hour care setting. The
YDS role is to assist in planning and monitoring daily activities of youth within the group home. The YDS provides supportive services (such as activities, life skills, etc.) to youth based on their service plans and program goals.
In addition the YDS will be integral in planning and supporting the instruction within the youth education. The YDS will organize and facilitate educational enrichment, life skills, groups, activities, community service, etc. with youth both within the school day and on non-school days throughout the year.
The YDS will assist the staff in teaching residents healthy leisure time activities and healthy behavior lifestyles. YDS assists in providing for the daily care and safety of residents. Duties include but are not limited to the following.
- Works to plan and execute lessons and groups to support individual and small group achievement.
- Plans activity schedules for non-school days to provide structure, engagement and enrichment throughout summer and non-school days.
- Provides instruction in the absence of a teacher when the youth is not in school.
- Monitors school attendance and addresses off tasks behaviors appropriately.
- Is able to represent agency in meetings and team meetings as needed.
- Works collaboratively with school staff to ensure safe and productive learning environments.
- Interacts with clients in a positive and therapeutic manner according to policy, procedure, training and Agency Guiding Beliefs.
- Provide active supervision of clients and staffs at all
- Plan and facilitate client activities/daily routines to include groups and specific programming.
- Provide therapeutic counseling to groups and individual clients per program standards.
- Provide oversight/support to clients, client families, and ancillary service providers while clients are participating in community-based activities (pass, school, work, attending services/programs) as indicated per program.
- Maintain and document regular contact with individuals/agencies outside of the program providing services for/associated with clients.
- Observe, assess, and document client activity per agency/program standards
- (client logs, incident reports, behavior management logs).
- Attend child/family team meetings/reviews and provide verbal and written input per agency/program standards.
- Maintain a physical plan to agency and licensing standards.
- Knowing, enforcing and abiding by all agency rules, policies and procedure
- Accounting for the whereabouts of residents at all times.
- Assist in making sure all resident chores are properly done
- Plan healthy lifestyle and recreational activities for the residents.
- Participate in activities with residents.
- Work with other Community Based Organizations to provide educational/healthy lifestyle topics to residents based upon their need (s).
- Maintain client confidentiality within all written and verbal communications
- Facilitate and document client’s self-administration of medications in accurate and timely manner.
- Supports the goals of the agency mission/vision.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Minimum of 1 year experience working with At Risk Youth
- AA or Bachelor’s Degree in related fields.
- Ability to attend initial and ongoing training, which meets agency/program and licensing standards.
- Ability to obtain/maintain child care certification.
- Ability to rotate and shift if need arises.
- Ability to be on-call to supervise and work shifts as need(s) arise.
- Ability to display cultural competence by responding respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, languages, classes, races, ethnic backgrounds, religions and other diversity factors in a manner that recognizes, affirms and values the worth of individuals, families and communities and protects and preserves the dignity of each.
- Ability to work flexible shifts as need(s) arise.
- Basic computer and keyboarding skills are desirable.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to operate a 7 passenger van to transport clients.
- Ability to use vehicle for work related duties according to the agency’s insurance liability standards
Must Possess a Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and proof of liability motor vehicle insurance.
