JOB TITLE: Fair Housing Enforcement Specialist
AGENCY: Housing Opportunities Made Equal is a nationally recognized civil rights agency which, since 1963, has led the struggle for fair housing in Western New York. HOME operates under government contracts to assist victims of housing discrimination, conduct educational programs, and provide mobility and housing counseling services
QUALIFICATIONS: Ideal candidate would have an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, or comparable experience, in a relevant discipline as well as demonstrable skills in such areas as law, social research, housing or human services. Spanish language skills are desirable.
COMPENSATION: $44,200 plus a benefit package which includes health insurance, 14 paid holidays annually, and generous paid time off. HOME is a Public Service Loan Forgiveness program eligible employer.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Associate Director and Director of Investigations, the Enforcement Specialist will be responsible for assisting with fair housing investigation enforcement and assisting in the preparation and filing of enforcement actions. Please note, this position works out of our secondary office, located at 135 Delaware Ave. Buffalo 14202.
Specific responsibilities of this position include:
- Assisting with special testing project investigations and documentary research;
- Preparing and presenting accurate summaries of findings and recommendations;
- Assisting in preparation and management of cases filed with government agencies or in civil court;
- Assisting in efforts to conciliate validated allegations of discrimination;
- Providing services to clients with validated claims of housing discrimination, including paralegal counseling, client advocacy, emotional support and referrals where appropriate;
- Communication and coordinating with parties to enforcement actions, including cooperating attorneys, government officials, and court staff for scheduling and sharing information;
- Assisting in the preparation of project reports and status update presentations;
- Assisting in recruiting, selecting and training fair housing investigators;
- Conducting on-going monitoring of housing providers to ensure their compliance with applicable law, court orders and conciliation agreements;
- Organizing and managing detailed case records;
- Assisting in case assessment for clients alleging housing discrimination.
